India will have a difficult task as G-20 chair, says IMF chief economist

India, which will hold the G-20 presidency next year, will have a difficult task as the group's chair to bring countries together on some of the key challenges being faced by the world, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the chief economist of the IMF, said on Wednesday. One of the challenges for the G-20 right now, as we've seen, is of course how to deal with geo-economic fragmentation. And geo-economy fragmentation is just reflecting the fact that we've seen enormous tensions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Gourinchas told PTI in an interview. To some extent to the G-20, it's much harder to have these kinds of conversations around the common goods in the current environment because there is all this tension related to geopolitical considerations. And so, India will have a difficult task, but also, I would think one of the important objectives will be to keep the countries at the table, to keep the discussion going, keep progress being made on important issues, he said in respons

India's deployment of cash transfer scheme a logical marvel: IMF

India's deployment of a direct cash transfer scheme and other similar social welfare programmes is a logical marvel, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Wednesday. From India, there is a lot to learn. There is a lot to learn from some other examples around the world. We have examples from pretty much every continent and every level of income. If I look at the case of India, it is actually quite impressive, Paolo Mauro, Deputy Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department at the IMF, told reporters at a news conference here. In fact, just because of the sheer size of the country, it is a logical marvel how these programmes that seek to help people who are at low-income levels reach literally hundreds of millions of people, he said in response to a question on the impressive direct cash transfer programme being successfully implemented by the Indian government. There are programmes that target specifically women. There are programmes that target the elderly and farmers. Perhaps

G20 has great potential to work towards global good: Finance Minister

Ahead of India taking over the annual presidency of G-20 coming December, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said the grouping of the top 20 economies of the world has great potential to work towards the global public good. G-20 has a great potential to work towards global goods. When I say public goods, will also have to be made far more strengthened. India stack, for instance, can become a global stack. Efficient cross-border payments and cheaper remittances are all the benefits which we can derive out of it, Sitharaman told a think-tank here. Responding to a question during a fireside chat with eminent Indian American economist Eshwar Prasad at the prestigious Brookings Institute, Sitharaman said these are some of the areas in which she would want the G-20 to work together. We love to work together with them and get some good outcomes, she said. Observing that India is taking the G-20 presidency from Indonesia at challenging times, Sitharaman said India has been

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to travel to India in November

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen here on Tuesday announced to travel to India next month to attend the ninth edition of US India Economic and Financial Partnership, asserting that the US-India relationship is critical to addressing the world's most important global economic challenges. I am glad to announce today that in November ahead of the G20 meetings, I will take my first trip to India as Treasury Secretary, to attend the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership, our ninth partnership meeting, Yellen told reporters at the top of her bilateral meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This partnership, she said, not only is vital to their core economic interests but also demonstrates to their citizens and the world that democracies deliver. It illustrates the close bonds between our two countries, from the Quad partnership to our strong bilateral economic relationship, and the cultural ties from the Indian diaspora in the US, she said. Sitharaman is on a ...

Advanced nations must take responsibility for global spillover: Sitharaman

Cautioning the West against imposing sanctions on countries, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said in the near-term, advanced nations must take responsibility for the "global spillover" of their political and economic policy decisions. Sitharaman arrived here earlier in the day to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The finance minister during her five-day visit will also hold a bilateral meeting with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. "That international cooperation is needed more than ever is to state the obvious," she said in her prepared speech at the Brookings Institute think-tank. In the near-term, advanced nations must take responsibility for the global spillover of their political and economic policy decisions and put in place safety nets rather than impose sanctions on nations who are merely fulfilling their moral and democratic obligations for their people, Sitharaman said. Sitharaman's remarks assum

Targeting infrastructure and causing civilian deaths not acceptable: EAM

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday that targeting infrastructure and causing civilian deaths is not acceptable in any part of the world and emphasised on the need for both sides in the Ukraine conflict to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue as "this conflict is not helping anybody at all." Jaishankar made the remarks while responding to questions after his address at the Lowy Institute on the growing importance of India's relationship with Australia and the interests that both countries share as members of the security-focused Quad. "We really think that targeting infrastructure and causing civilian deaths is not acceptable in any part of the world," Jaishankar said while responding to a question on Russia's missile strikes targeting key cities across Ukraine on Monday, including the capital Kyiv which is being seen as the most intense attack since the conflict started on February 24. West saw military dictatorship in region as preferred partner: Jaishankar

India has a substantial inventory of Soviet and Russian-origin weapons because the Western countries opted a military dictatorship in the region as its preferred partner and did not supply weapons to New Delhi for decades, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday, in an apparent reference to Pakistan. During a joint press meet with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong here, Jaishankar also said that India and Russia have a long-standing relationship that has certainly served New Delhi's interests well. "We have a substantial inventory of Soviet and Russian-origin weapons. And that inventory actually grew for a variety of reasons. You know, the merits of the weapons systems themselves, but also because for multiple decades, Western countries did not supply weapons to India, and in fact, saw a military dictatorship next to us as the preferred partner," Jaishankar said, in an apparent reference to Pakistan, which was a close ally of the US-led West during the Cold ...
