India reports 2,994 Covid infections, active cases rise to 16,354

India on Saturday recorded 2,994 new COVID-19 infections, while the number of active cases increased to 16,354, according to Union health ministry data. With the fresh infections, India's COVID-19 tally stands at 4.47 crore (4,47,18,781). The death toll climbed to 5,30,876 with nine deaths, the data updated at 8 am stated. Two deaths each were reported from Delhi, Karnataka and Punjab, one from Gujarat, and two were reconciled by Kerala. At 16,354, the active cases comprise 0.04 per cent of the total infections. The national COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 98.77 per cent, according to the health ministry website. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.09 per cent and the weekly positivity at 2.03 per cent. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,71,551. New York City Mayor Eric Adams loves the Indian American community and wants to build bridges between India and the United States, his Indian American aide has said. Speaking at an event here organised to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Indian American International Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Commissioner, Mayor's Office for International Affairs Dilip Chauhan said mayor was looking for the right time to travel to India. "Definitely he's looking to travel (to India) and build the bridges between India and the US. He loves the Indian American community, he told PTI on Friday on the sidelines of the event here. First stock of eggs imported from India sold in Sri Lankan market

The first stock of eggs imported from India by Sri Lanka was distributed to the crisis-hit island nation's market, with one egg costing Rs 35 to bakery owners, a media report said on Friday. Sri Lanka imported two million eggs from India to ensure food security in the crisis-hit island nation, Trade and Food Safety Minister Nalin Fernando said last week. The decision to import eggs was based on a decision by a cabinet committee to ensure food security, Fernando said on March 23. This stock of eggs imported by Sri Lanka's State Trading (General) Corporation was distributed among bakery owners on Thursday at the Kerawalapitiya Spet R. Private lender Bandhan Bank adds 50 new branches to its existing network

Private lender Bandhan Bank on Friday said it has added 50 more branches to its existing network of around 1350 others across the country. The majority of the new branches opened are in Bihar, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the Kolkata-based bank said in a statement. It said that the spread of the new branches is a testament to the bank's commitment to expand its reach across the country and serve the needs of all segments of customers. The bank is also well on its journey of diversification of asset book and geographical presence. It also plans to introduce new products and increase the width of services in the next financial year, the statement added. India records 3,095 new Covid infections, active cases increase to 15,208

India witnessed a single-day rise of 3,095 fresh COVID-19 cases with the active caseload increasing to 15,208, according to Union Health ministry data updated on Friday. The toll has risen to 5,30,867 with five deaths -- one each reported by Goa and Gujarat and three reconciled by Kerala -- in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am said. The daily positivity was recorded at 2.61 per cent while the weekly positivity was pegged at 1.91 per cent. The total tally of Covid cases was recorded at 4.47 crore (4,47,15,786). The active cases now comprise 0.03 per cent of the total infections while the national recovery rate has been recorded at 98.78 per cent, according to the ministry website. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease is at 4.41 crore (4,41,69,711) while the case fatality was recorded at 1.19 per cent. According to the ministry website, 220.65 crore Covid vaccine doses have been administered under the nationwide drive so far.

The Pakistan government's official Twitter account has been withheld in India.When anyone tries to access the Twitter account of the Pakistan government, it says, "Account Withheld @GovtofPakistan's account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand."This is reportedly the third time when Pakistan's Twitter account has been restricted to be viewed in India.Earlier in October 2022, the Twitter account of the Pakistan government was withheld in India.It was reportedly the second such incident in recent months. This account was withheld earlier in July as well but had been reactivated and was visible.According to Twitter guidelines, the microblogging site takes such action in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order. Government to unveil new Foreign Trade Policy 2023-28 on Friday: Ministry

India will unveil its much-awaited new Foreign Trade Policy 2023-28 on Friday, with a view to boost exports amid slowing global trade. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will announce the foreign trade policy, according to the ministry. The current foreign trade policy (2015-20) is in force till March 31, 2022. Govt exempts import duty on drugs for personal use to treat rare disease

The government has exempted basic customs duty on all drugs and food for special medical purposes imported for personal use for treatment of rare diseases. The import duty waiver will come into effect from April 1. Also, the government has exempted Pembrolizumab (Keytruda), used in treatment of various cancers, from basic customs duty. Drugs/Medicines generally attract basic customs duty of 10 per cent, while some categories of life saving drugs/vaccines attract a concessional rate of 5 per cent or Nil. "The Central Government has given full exemption from basic customs duty on all drugs and Food for Special Medical Purposes imported for personal use for treatment of all Rare Diseases listed under the National Policy for Rare Diseases 2021," a finance ministry statement said.
