Rivers Krishna, Penna in Andhra continue to overflow amid continuing rain

Rivers Krishna and Penna continued their full flow in Andhra Pradesh as rains have not stopped, keeping the official machinery on its toes. The flood touched 4.43-lakh cusecs mark at Prakasam Barrage on river Krishna at Vijayawada on Saturday afternoon, but remained steady, with the first warning signal in place. The Somasila reservoir on river Penna in SPS Nellore district, too, received bountiful water, filling it up to 91.40 per cent of full reservoir-level. While the inflow was recorded at 44,493 cusecs, the outflow was 50,745, according to Water Resources Information Management System data. The discharge from Gandikota reservoir in YSR Kadapa district crossed 35,000 cusecs and from Mylavaram 37,556 cusecs. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, the flood flow was less at Srisailam reservoir on river Krishna with reduced inflows from upstream. With a discharge of 4.50 lakh cusecs at Srisailam, the flow into the downstream Nagarjuna Sagar increased to 3.93 lakh .

Monsoon 2021: Bengal flood situation remains critical; 300,000 affected

The flood situation in West Bengal remained critical on Thursday though there was less rainfall, a senior state government official said. The number of deaths due to the deluge remained unchanged at 23 as no fresh fatality was reported from any of the seven affected districts where around three lakh people have been shifted to rescue centres. "The flood situation remains critical. We are monitoring it. Adequate measures have been taken and we have ensured that there is ample supply of drinking water, dry food packets and medicines," the official said. Flood waters in Assam further receded on Friday and remained in four districts affecting a population of over 2.41 lakh, though the deluge claimed one more life, a government bulletin said here. With the death of one person in Morigaon district, the total number of people who lost their lives in flood-related incidents this year rose to 121, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in the bulletin. It said that 2,41,825 people of 379 villages in four districts are now affected, while the number of people hit by the calamity on Thursday was 2.70 lakh in seven districts. Flood waters receded from three districts since Thursday and the districts of Goalpara, Morigaon, Hojai and Nagaon remained submerged now. ASDMA said that 22,802 hectare of crop areas are under water now.
