The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to follow the reservation policy for admission in research degree programmes and recruitment of faculty members at IITs as provided under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Act, 2019. The top court was hearing a plea filed by a man named S N Pandey seeking direction to the Centre and the IITs to follow the reservation policy with regard to admissions in research programmes and recruitment of faculty members, claiming the guidelines were being violated. Over 11,000 faculty positions are vacant in central universities, IITs and IIMs across the country, according to Ministry of Education (MoE) statistics. The data was shared by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a written reply in Lok Sabha. In 45 Central Universities, a total of 6,180 posts of Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor, out of 18,956 sanctioned posts are vacant. Similarly, in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), a total of 4,502 posts out of 11,170 sanctioned posts are vacant. In Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), 493 posts out of 1,566 faculty posts are vacant. "Occurrence of vacancies and filling thereof is a continuous process. Central Universities are autonomous bodies, established under respective Central Acts. President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday stressed on the need to make educational institutions future ready and said India has a great talent pool which is yet to be fully tapped. The president was addressing the closing ceremony of diamond jubilee celebrations of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. "India has great talent pool which is yet to be fully tapped. We need to make our institutes future ready with new teaching and learning metrics, pedagogy and content," she said. Over 4,500 faculty positions are vacant in 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Ministry of Education informed the Rajya Sabha. According to data shared with the Upper House of Parliament, IITs in Kharagpur with 798 vacancies and Bombay with 517 vacancies have the most faculty positions vacant. The top-ranked IIT-Madras too has 482 faculty positions lying vacant. A total of 4,596 teaching positions are vacant in the IITs. "Filling up of vacancies is a continuous process and IITs issue rolling advertisements, which are open throughout the year for all candidates, who fulfil the required qualifications and experience for faculty positions in IITs, said Union Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar in a written reply.
