Prices of natural gas, which is used to generate electricity, make fertiliser and is converted into CNG to run automobiles, were on Friday hiked by a steep 40 per cent to record levels, in step with global firming up of energy rates. The rate paid for gas produced from old fields, which make up for about two-thirds of all gas produced in the country, was hiked to USD 8.57 per million British thermal units from the current USD 6.1, according to an order from the oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC). Simultaneously, the price of gas from difficult and newer fields like the ones in Reliance Industries Ltd and its partner bp plc operated deepsea D6 block in KG basin, was hiked to USD 12.6 per mmBtu from USD 9.92, the order said. These are the highest rates for administered/regulated fields (like ONGC's Bassein field off the Mumbai coast) and free-market areas (such as the KG basin). The Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), on Saturday, increased the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs 2 per kg. With this CNG will cost Rs 75.61 per kg with effect from today.
Earlier, on March 24, the PNG price was increased by Rs 1/SCM
The move will affect more than 72 lakh domestic households.

CNG prices in national capital were today hiked by 90 paisa per kg and that of piped cooking gas by Rs 1.15, following government raising input natural gas rates to two year high. IGL, which retails CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to households in national capital region (NCR), said CNG price in Delhi will be Rs 40.61 per kg and Rs 47.05 in Noida, Greater Noida & Ghaziabad, effective midnight tonight. The price of CNG being supplied in Rewari is being increased by 95 paise per kg from Rs 50.67 per kg to Rs 51.62 per kg. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) will continue to offer a discount of Rs 1.50 per kg in the selling prices of CNG (compressed natural gas) for filling between 12.30 am to 5.30 am at select outlets, the company said in a statement.
