Hong Kong police raid office of online news outlet, arrest 6 for conspiracy

Hong Kong police were raiding the office of an online news outlet on Wednesday after arresting six people for conspiracy to publish a seditious publication. More than 200 officers were taking part in the search, police said. They had a warrant to seize relevant journalistic materials under a national security law enacted last year. The six were arrested early Wednesday under a colonial-era crimes ordinance for conspiracy to publish a seditious publication, and searches of their residences were underway, police said. According to the local South China Morning Post newspaper, police arrested one current and one former editor at Stand News, as well as four former board members including singer and activist Denise Ho and former lawmaker Margaret Ng. Police did not identify those who were arrested. Early Wednesday, Stand News posted a video on Facebook of police officers at the home of a deputy editor, Ronson Chan, to investigate the alleged crime. Chan, who is also chair of the Hong K

Hong Kong: Lowest election voters turnout yet, pro-govt candidates win

Hong Kong "patriots only" elections witnessed a record low voter turnout as pro-government candidates swept into the expanded legislature. The elections were held under a revamped system ordered by Beijing which marginalized democrats, Hong Kong Free Press reported.Around 1.3 million voters cast ballots on Sunday for a 30.2 per cent voter turnout - 5.6 percentage points less than the last historic low in the 1995 legislative election under British colonial rule.Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said in a statement on Sunday that the new legislature would bring an era of "good governance" to the city.Turnout is a central issue, as observers consider it a barometer of legitimacy in an election where pro-democracy candidates are largely absent, and a crackdown under a China-imposed national security law has jailed dozens of pro-democratic contenders who had originally wanted to run, and forced others into exile.Under the electoral shake-up, the proportion of directly elected seats was .

Hong Kong public gears up to vote as new election laws comes in effect

Hong Kong voters are preparing to vote for the first time this weekend since election laws were changed, amid a dearth of opposition candidates, months after the city began cracking down on dissent. The legislative elections, to be held Sunday, come after Beijing in March passed a resolution for electoral reform in Hong Kong that gives Beijing more control over who is elected to Hong Kong's legislature. Beijing has tightened its grip over the semi-autonomous Chinese city following months of pro-democracy protests in 2019 that at times descended into violent clashes between police and protesters. Hong Kong later amended its laws in May, reducing the number of directly elected lawmakers to 20 from 35, even as the legislature was expanded from 70 to 90 seats. Most of the lawmakers in the legislature would be appointed by largely pro-Beijing bodies. Under the new laws, legislative candidates will also be vetted by a largely pro-Beijing committee to ensure that only patriots loyal to ..
