High fuel prices to keep gas-based power projects in a bind

Unavailability of natural gas and steep prices of imported LNG is hurting the operations of gas-based power projects in the country. Gas based power generation capacity in the country is 25,300 Mw- the figure is 7.5 per cent of the total installed power capacity. Data by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows over 70 per cent of privately operated gas plant potential is underutilized due to unavailability of natural gas required to fuel them. For the ones operated by Centre or state, the under-utilization is lower at 38-40 per cent. In 2016-17, the gas fired projects operated at a mere 22.51 per cent plant load factor (PLF), producing 49 billion units of electricity."One of the major factors hurting gas based plants is the high price of fuel which is pushing their tariffs to as high as Rs 11-12 per unit of electricity in case of LNG based plants", says an industry report on 'Power- Thermal and Nuclear Energy" released by CARE Ratings.Out of 25,329 Mw of gas-based power plants ..

Taking a cue from state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs), private sector fuel retailers Reliance Industries, Essar Oil and Shell India are likely to revise motor fuel prices on a daily basis from Friday."Our outlets are already automated and can go live with dynamic pricing any day. As soon as other players shift to a daily pricing regime, we will also," said a senior official from a private sector major, on condition anonymity.As of April 1, by official data, India had 59,595 fuel retail outlets. Of these, close to 54,000 were owned by state-run Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation.
