Death toll in Turkey, Syria earthquakes reaches 9,400; deadliest in 10 yrs

The death toll from the earthquake in southern Turkiye and northern Syria has climbed past 9,400, making it the deadliest seismic event in more than a decade. Turkish authorities updated the country's death toll to 6,957 on Wednesday. In neighbouring Syria, the government has reported 1,250 deaths from Monday's pre-dawn earthquake in the areas it controls. The White Helmets, volunteer first responders in a rebel-held enclave, have reported 1,280 deaths. More than 30,000 people have been injured, and authorities expect the death toll to continue to climb as rescue workers race to pull survivors from the rubble in cities and towns across a wide area. In 2011, a magnitude 9.0 quake off the northeast coast of Japan triggered a tsunami, killing nearly 20,000 people. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepalin 2015 killed more than 8,800 people.

Fire rages at Iskenderun Port after devastating earthquakes in Turkey

A frantic race was underway on Tuesday to find more survivors and help the injured as the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria the previous day reached 4,600. The toll is likely to climb as freezing weather and multiple aftershocks are hurting the rescue efforts despite massive international assistance. A large fire that broke out at a section of a port in an earthquake-stricken city in southeast Turkey is raging for a second day. Television images Tuesday showed thick black smoke rising from burning containers at Iskenderun Port on the Mediterranean Sea, in the city of Iskenderun. Reports said the fire was caused by containers that toppled over during the powerful earthquake that struck southeast Turkey on Monday. Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency said a Turkish Coast Guard vessel was assisting efforts to extinguish the fire.

A powerful deep-sea earthquake damaged village buildings in eastern Indonesia early Tuesday, and its substantial shaking was widely felt in northern Australia. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency issued a tsunami warning after the magnitude 7.6 temblor that was lifted three hours later. Based on four tide gauge observations around the center of the earthquake, it did not show any significant anomaly or change in sea level, agency head Dwikorita Karnawati said. Tremors were felt in several regions, including Papua and East Nusa Tenggara provinces. The National Disaster Mitigation agency received visual reports of damage to houses and community buildings in Watuwey village in Southwest Maluku.
