Dubai court orders man to pay $1.25 bn to Denmark in tax fraud case

A British man accused by Denmark of masterminding a USD 1.7 billion tax fraud has been ordered by a Dubai court to pay Copenhagen's tax authority USD 1.25 billion, court filings seen on Friday show, just days after another Dubai court rejected an extradition order for him. The order by the Dubai Court of Appeal against Sanjay Shah comes as part of a civil case filed four years ago by Denmark's tax authority, who have been pursuing him as part of their investigation in one of the country's largest-ever tax fraud case. Shah has maintained his innocence in the case while fighting extradition. Lawyers representing Shah in the separate civil case did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. Denmark has accused Shah of masterminding an elaborate tax scheme for three years beginning in 2012 involving foreign businesses pretending to own shares in Danish companies and claiming tax refunds for which they were not eligible. The Danish tax authority, Skattestyrelsen, filed the

Danish national contests extradition in $1.7 billion fraud case in Dubai

The lawyer of a British man who was arrested in Dubai for allegedly masterminding a USD 1.7 billion tax scheme in Denmark asked judges on Monday not to extradite him. Denmark wants hedge fund trader Sanjay Shah extradited from the United Arab Emirates, but Shah's lawyer, Ali al-Zarooni, argued in court that an international extradition treaty between the two countries is still not active in the UAE. Speaking in front of three judges in a session behind closed doors, al-Zarooni asked the court to deny the extradition request. Al-Zarooni told The Associated Press after the hearing that he believed Denmark had breached international treaties regarding extradition pursuing its request. Danish officials signed an agreement in March allowing for extradition between the UAE and Denmark. Shah has maintained his innocence in interviews with journalists while living in Dubai over the last few years. The hedge fund manager had run a center for autistic children in Dubai that shut down in 2020

Dubai airport sees air travel surge, expects FIFA World Cup boost: CEO

Dubai International Airport saw a surge in passengers over the first half of 2022 as pandemic restrictions eased and the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar will further boost traffic to the city-state's second airfield, its chief executive said Wednesday. Paul Griffiths, who oversees the world's busiest airport for international travel, told The Associated Press that the airport handled 160% more traffic over the past six months compared to the same period last year, part of an air travel rebound around the world. The nearly 28 million people who traveled through the airport over the past six months represent some 70% of the airport's pre-pandemic levels, even as Dubai's key source market of China remains closed due to severe pandemic restrictions. Griffiths said he expects the airport's traffic to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of next year. It's a very, very welcome surge of traffic, Griffiths said. The first World Cup in the Middle East, he added, will send foreign socce
