BIF advocates new framework to improve submarine cables; upgrade stations

Broadband India Forum (BIF) on Tuesday underlined the need to promote competition, innovation, and investment in the domain of submarine cable landing stations, as the industry body advocated for non-discriminatory and open access to all potential seekers of international connectivity. The think tank has emphasised the need for creation of robust submarine cable systems connected to India as well as geo-diversity and augmentation of submarine cable landing infrastructure, according to a statement by BIF. "Through its consultation paper on 'Licensing Framework and Regulatory Mechanism for Submarine Cable Landing in India' to the TRAI, BIF...has underscored the need to promote competition, innovation, and investment in the domain of submarine cable landing stations and provide equal, fair, non-discriminatory and open access to all potential seekers of international connectivity," it said. Himachal Pradesh chief secretary Prabodh Saxena on Thursday asked the officers to take necessary steps to provide assured high speed and reliable digital connectivity in remote and rural areas of the state. Presiding over a meeting of the State Broadband Committee, under the National Broadband Mission (NBM) here, he asked for time bound efforts to strengthen fiber connectivity in rural areas and provide quality digital connectivity to ensure universal access of broadband facilities to the people. Directions were issued to expedite the cases of grant of clearances under the Forest Rights Act (FRA) to achieve the targets under the 4G saturation project in a time bound manner. Workers with digital skills contribute Rs 10.9 trn to India's GDP: Study

Workers in India equipped with advanced digital skills, including cloud architecture or software development, contributed an estimated Rs 10.9 lakh crore, or USD 507.9 billion, to India's annual gross domestic product, an AWS-commissioned study said on Wednesday. According to the study conducted by Gallup on behalf of AWS, workers with advanced digital skills earn 92 per cent higher salaries in India compared to those with a similar education who do not use digital skills at work. "Digital skills yield big economic benefits. We have seen dividends for the GDP for India's GDP to the tune of about USD 508 billion. People who have advanced digital skills, command higher salaries," Gallup, Managing Consultant, Rohit Kar said while sharing findings of the report. Trai to issue consultation paper to strengthen digital inclusion in India

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will bring out a consultation paper to further strengthen digital inclusion in the country, and devices, connectivity as well as literacy will be three key aspects it will dwell into. TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela said that the consultation paper in this regard, will be released in the coming months. The upcoming consultation paper is expected to look at three key aspects -- devices, connectivity and literacy, Vaghela said on the sidelines of India Digital Summit 2023, organised by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). Vaghela, while speaking at the event, said: "We are planning to come out with a consultation paper to comprehensively address and look at further strengthening digital inclusion in the country." 69% mobile service subscribers face call drop, connection issues: Survey

A majority of respondents in a survey claimed that they face call drop or call connection issues on any given day, online survey firm LocalCircles said on Thursday. According to the survey report, 28 per cent respondents said that they get uninterrupted access to 4G or 5G network while 32 per cent shared that they do not have access to 4G or 5G services most of the time despite paying for it. "Sixtynine per cent mobile service subscribers face call connection/call drop problems on any given day," the report said. The survey received over 42,000 responses from citizens located in 338 districts of India. However, the number of responses varied from question to question, LocalCircles said. A total of 10,927 people responded to questions on the frequency of call connection or call drop on any given day. India has climbed up six places to 61st rank in the Network Readiness Index 2022 report prepared by US-based non-profit body Portulans Institute, the telecom ministry said on Saturday. The country's overall score has improved to 51.19 in 2022 from 49.74 in 2021, the statement said. "India has improved its position by six slots and is now placed at 61st rank as per the Network Readiness Index 2022 (NRI 2022) report released recently," the statement said.
