Removed encroachment from Yamuna floodplains: DDA tells Delhi High Court

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court it has removed encroachment from the Yamuna floodplains here and demolished the jhuggis which were directed to be vacated by a single judge last week. A bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, while hearing an appeal by the jhuggi dwellers against the single judge order, asked DDA to file an affidavit in relation to the exercise. Has the demolition taken place? asked the bench, also comprising Justice Subramonium Prasad, to which the counsel for DDA responded, Yes, it has been completed. It is over. Delhi LG chairs meet aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving mobility

In a bid to ease traffic congestion and improve overall mobility on the city roads, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena chaired a meeting on Monday and approved decisions like alternate road plans and Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) plans for Delhi Metro stations, a statement from the LG office said. Several decisions have been taken at the meeting that was held with the governing body of the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre (UTTIPEC), it said. To ease the traffic situation and improve mobility, transport and transit in the city including alternate road plan from Chhatarpur on MG Road to Goalpahari at Haryana border have been approved at the meeting. Walkability plan for Mandi House and MMI plans for Shadipur, Mayur Vihar and Peeragarhi Metro Stations have also been cleared, the statement from the LG office said. Delhi accounts for 70% of One Nation One Ration Card transactions in India

Delhi has accounted for 70 per cent of all One Nation One Ration Card transactions in India since the scheme's implementation here in 2021, said the Economic Survey of Delhi report for 2022-23, tabled in the Assembly on Monday. The One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme was implemented in Delhi on July 19, 2021, with with installation of e-PoS devices at fair price shops. In Delhi, ration is distributed through e-PoS devices after biometric (Aadhaar) authentication of beneficiaries. The scheme provides intra-state and inter-state portability of ration cards and enables migrant beneficiaries to access the public distribution system. Under the ONORC scheme, 5,21,994 migrants on an average received ration in 2022-23, the report said. Under Delhi's public distribution system, 5 kg foodgrains (4 kg wheat and 1 kg rice per person per month) is distributed to all food card holders and 1 kg sugar only to Antyodaya Anna Yojana card holders. The Delhi High Court has directed authorities to provide food, clean drinking water, livelihood and transport facilities to individuals who will be relocated from the slums at Bhairo Marg here that have to be demolished. The high court said that though the Delhi government has sought to make efforts to rehabilitate slum dwellers on paper, the ground reality is far from desirable. Due to this, this court finds it necessary to reiterate that the right to housing, being a part and parcel of the right to livelihood, health, food, clean drinking water, sewerage and transport facilities, such facilities must be provided to individuals who will be relocated to Geeta Colony, Dwarka, a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said. Delhi excise policy case: Kavitha appears before ED for questioning

BRS leader K Kavitha on Monday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) here for the second round of questioning in the Delhi excise policy linked money laundering case, officials said. The 44-year-old MLC daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was first questioned in the case on March 11 following which she was summoned again on March 16. Kavitha, however, skipped the deposition citing her pending plea for relief against the ED action in the case. The federal probe agency rejected her claims and asked her to depose on March 20. Lakhs of farmers headed to Delhi for 'kisan mahapanchayat' on Monday: SKM

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Sunday said lakhs of farmers from across the country are on their way to Delhi to participate in the 'kisan mahapanchayat' that will be held at Ramlila Maidan on March 20. The 'kisan mahapanchayat' will be held to press for a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP), the SKM, an umbrella body of farmers' union, had said last month. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Saturday said his government has started working on the rejuvenation of 26 lakes across the city with a total area of over 300 acres to improve water availability in the national capital. The Delhi government has completed the rejuvenation of 35 water bodies. A total of 380 water bodies are to be brought back to life, he said during a visit to an artificial lake at Pappankalan. "We will turn Delhi into a city of lakes, increase groundwater levels and supply drinking water to every household," Kejriwal said while detailing his government's vision of making the national capital self-sufficient in drinking water. The groundwater table around Papankalan has risen by 6.25 metres due to the lake. Soon, 20 MGD (million gallons per day) of water drawn through tubewells will be supplied to households, he said. Delhi budget to focus on cleaning of Yamuna, removal of landfill garbage

Themed "neat and clean Delhi", the annual budget of the Arvind Kejriwal government will focus on cleaning of Yamuna and removing three mountains of garbage from landfill sites in the city, official sources said on Saturday. In the budget 2023-24, to be tabled in the ongoing session of the Assembly, Delhi government will lay out a plan to beautify and modernise the city's infrastructure, they said. With a focus on rejuvenating the heavily polluted Yamuna, the government will increase the quantity of sewage being treated in Delhi to 890 mgd next year. The sewage treatment capacity in the city was 370 mgd in 2015. The number of colonies with sewer connection will almost be doubled from 747 to 1,317. The scheme of free household sewer connections will continue, they said. Delhi government with Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will pool in resources to get rid of the three garbage mountains, the city's "shame", in the next two years, sources added.

HC asks officials to respond to plea to set 42 commercial courts in Delhi

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought the responses of its administrative side, the city government and the Centre on a petition seeking directions to set up 42 more commercial courts in the national capital to ensure a speedy redressal of commercial cases.
