A woman, along with her son, was arrested for allegedly killing her husband and chopping the body into 22 pieces in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar, police said on Monday. Poonam and Deepak kept the body parts of Anjan Das in a fridge and would dispose them of at different places in east Delhi, they said. Poonam told police that Das had an illicit relationship and this was the reason behind the killing. This comes days after a 28-year-old man allegedly strangled his live-in partner and sawed her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in south Delhi's Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days, police said on Monday.
The fire fighting operation at Bhagirath Palace market in Chandni Chowk here continued for the fourth straight day on Sunday, officials said. Eight fire tenders are still at the spot and the fire has largely been brought under control, they said. Around 200 shops were damaged in the massive fire that broke out in the wholesale market for electronic appliances on Thursday night. On Saturday, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena had visited the market and said a multi-disciplinary committee had been constituted to look into ways to effectively address issues like hanging wires and overloaded circuits with the active involvement of residents and other stakeholders in areas like Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar and Paharganj, among others. BJP chief J P Nadda went door to door in Delhi's Wazirpur on Sunday, seeking votes for his party's candidates in the upcoming municipal elections. As part of the BJP's mega campaign, Nadda interacted with locals and handed out copies of the party's 'Sankalp Patra' (manifesto). He was accompanied by BJP MP Harsh Vardhan and other party leaders. In the evening, Nadda will take part in the door-to-door campaign in south Delhi's Badarpur area. The BJP plans to reach out to voters across the 250 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards. It has deployed around 100 of its big guns, including several Union ministers, chief ministers of party-ruled states and senior office-bearers for the task. Polling station-wise allocation of electronic voting machines has been done following second level randomisation of these machines ahead of the December 4 Delhi municipal election, officials said on Saturday. The second level randomisation of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) was conducted by the respective district election officers in the presence of general observers appointed by the State Election Commission (SEC), Delhi, they said. The representatives of political parties and contesting candidates were also present during the process, the SEC said in a statement. After the second randomisation of the EVMs, polling station-wise allocation of the EVMs has been done, it said. The first level randomisation was earlier done by the Commission where ward-wise allocation of the EVMs was done. Randomisation of polling parties also is being done on two levels. People will overthrow the "most corrupt" party in the December 4 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls, Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha said on Saturday, targeting the BJP. In an interview with PTI, he alleged that the MCD under the BJP's 15-year rule "failed miserably" in its primary responsibility of ensuring cleanliness in the city. "Not even a single lane is cleaned by the MCD in a city where tonnes of waste are generated every day. The BJP has ruined the civic body. People see Kejriwal as a powerhouse who transformed the education and health sectors and he will do the same in the civic body as well," Chadha said. The BJP has the highest number of millionaire candidates in the fray for the December 4 Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls, followed by the AAP and the Congress, according to a report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). Of the top three richest candidates, two from the BJP and one from the AAP. Three candidates from the AAP have the highest amount of liabilities while two independent candidates have declared zero assets. Another independent candidate, a Congress nominee and a BSP candidate have the lowest assets, the report said. It said 162 (65 per cent) out of the 249 candidates analysed from the BJP, 148 (60 per cent) out of 248 from the AAP and 107 (44 per cent) out of 245 candidates analysed from the Congress have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore. The report said the average assets per candidate contesting the elections this time is Rs 2.27 crore. The Aam Aadmi Party has fielded the maximum 45 candidates with criminal records in municipal elections this year while the BJP has 27 such candidates, according to a report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The AAP has pitched 250 candidates, out of which 248 self sworn-affidavits were analysed by the ADR and 18 per cent of them i.e., 45 have criminal records, the report said. Moreover, at least eight per cent of the AAP candidates have serious criminal cases against them, it stated. Meanwhile, the BJP, which has also pitched 250 candidates, has 27 candidates (11 per cent) with criminal records and the Congress has fielded 25 such candidates. "45 (18 per cent) out of 248 candidates analysed from AAP, 27 (11 per cent) out of 249 candidates analysed from BJP and 25 (10 per cent) out of 245 candidates analysed from INC have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits," the report mentioned. With hardly a week to go for MCD polls, Delhi BJP has planned a mega visit of around 10,000 slum dwellers to EWS flats in Kalkaji, on Sunday, party leaders said. Recently, a total 3,024 economically weaker section flats were alloted to the slum dwellers of Bhoomiheen camp under in situ slum rehabilitation scheme of Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had handed over keys of the flats to some of the beneficiaries in a function held at Vigyan Bhawan. "Around 10,000 slum dwellers from 50 Assembly constituencies of the city will taken to a visit of the flats in Kalkaji that have been provided with all the amenities," said Delhi BJP secretary and incharge of jhugfi jhopri (JJ) cell of the party. Union minister Piyush Goyal on Friday released the BJP's party manifesto 'Sankalp Patra' for Delhi MCD polls which includes bringing all services online and 100 per cent garbage processing. Reading out the 12-point manifesto, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta said all services of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be brought online through a mobile application within 100 days. "Hundred per cent garbage will be processed through waste-to-energy conversion for a green and clean Delhi. Every slum dweller will be provided flats and 17,000 flats are ready for allotment. The BJP will also do away with trade and health licenses, and also abolish factory licenses," he said. Around 100 shops were gutted in a massive fire in the wholesale market of Bhagirath Palace area in Chandni Chowk here even as the cooling operations are currently underway, police said on Friday. No injuries have been reported so far, they said. Five major buildings got affected during the fire-fighting operations out of which three collapsed, they said. According to the fire department, a call about the blaze was received at 9.19 pm on Thursday and 40 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The CBI on Friday filed its first charge sheet against seven accused in the Delhi Excise policy scam case, officials said. The government has fixed an indicative value for Delhi's iconic 'The Ashok' hotel at Rs 7,409 crore under the national monetisation programme, according to sources. The Ashok and the adjacent hotel Samrat are among the eight India Tourism Development Corp assets listed under the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last year. The sources said investor consultation has already been undertaken and a cabinet note for the sale of the sprawling 25-acre property in the heart of the national capital is under consideration. "The Ashok hotel's monetisation will take place through public-private partnership(PPP) mode and an indicative value of the hotel has been fixed at Rs 7,409 crore," the sources told PTI. The court observed that witnesses who had deposed regarding Hussain's role in the case would be "under tremendous pressure and threat" if he was granted bail. Hussain had applied for bail in the case which was registered on a statement by complainant Ajay Goswami who had suffered a bullet injury during an incident of rioting on the Main Karawal Nagar Road on February 25, 2020.
