NCW seeks report from Delhi Police commissioner in Nikki Yadav murder case

The NCW has sought a report from Delhi police on the killing of a woman allegedly by her live-in partner in Delhi. A 24-year-old man allegedly strangled his live-in partner with a mobile phone cable in February 10 and hid her body in a refrigerator in his dhaba on the outskirts of Mitraon village in southwest Delhi. According to police, the accused, Sahil Gehlot, married a woman the same day he killed his girlfriend, Nikki Yadav. Sources from the National Commission for Women said the body has sought a report from the Delhi Police commissioner on the matter. "How heartless a person can be? Not only he killed his live-in partner but got married to another girl the same day. What is the role of parents that we need to look into also have to work out on the mindset of families who think children are their properties," tweeted NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma.

2023 significant year for Delhi Police in view of G20, says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday asserted that 2023 will be a significant year for the Delhi Police as the force will have to stay alert since the national capital will be hosting international dignitaries for G20 summit. Speaking at the 76th Raising Day parade of the Delhi Police, he also paid tributes to ASI Shambhu Dayal, who was stabbed to death by a snatcher in west Delhi's Mayapuri last month. "2023 will be a significant year for the Delhi Police since India will be hosting the G20 summit. In terms of traffic and security, the city police will have to stay alert since heads of several countries will be here," Shah said. He added that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the humane side of Delhi Police was seen by everyone as the personnel helped the elderly and other vulnerable sections of the society. "During this time, many security personnel also lost their lives," the minister added.

Fire in Delhi's Red Fort area, blaze under control, enquiry ordered

A fire broke out at a police post in north Delhi's Red Fort area, officials said on Wednesday. The blaze erupted inside the subway where body protectors, lathis and door-frame metal detectors were stored, they said. Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the blaze. A PCR call was received at Kotwali police station regarding the fire around 1 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said. Fire tenders and a Delhi Disaster Management Authority team reached the spot soon after to control the blaze, he said. "...within an hour and a half, fire and rescue teams stifled and assuaged the fire," Kalsi said. An enquiry is being conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire, he added.

DDA begins its demolition drive in Mehrauli amid tight police security

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) started a demolition drive on Friday in the Mehrauli area amid police security. Locals claimed that the drive that started in the morning was demolishing two and three-storeyed buildings near Aulia Masjid at Andehria More along with shanties. The land on which the alleged encroachment was done belonged to multiple agencies including DDA, Waqf Board, and ASI, they claimed. "A demolition drive is being carried out by the Horticulture Department of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority. Police personnel have been deployed on the spot as preventive protection for DDA officials to carry out their duties and also to maintain law and order in the locality. Initially, the localities had staged a protest against the demolition but the situation was later brought under control," said a senior police official. According to the demolition notice, the land on which the demolition is being carried out is a part of the Mehrauli Archaeological Park and the .

Delhi Police plans to recruit 6,000 personnel, half of them women

In a meeting on women safety chaired by LG VK Saxena, the Delhi Police informed on Thursday that it will soon recruit nearly 6,000 personnel including 3,000 women to improve policing in the national capital. Saxena stressed the need for increasing the representation of women police personnel in the force. The LG also instructed for enhanced and visible policing, expediting construction of buildings for fast-track courts dealing with women safety issues, and integrating street lights with 311 app, said a statement from the LG's Office. On being informed that there were 1,406 dark spots in the city that are yet to be illuminated, Saxena directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to complete the work within one month. Delhi Police celebrates safer internet month, talks about cyber crime

The Delhi Police is celebrating safer internet month posting videos regarding cyber awareness everyday starting from Monday, officials said. A senior police officer said the campaign was started from Monday which is celebrated as 'safer internet day'. "Through this campaign (Cool bano fool nahi), our motive is to spread awareness about the cyber crime which is increasing now a days rapidly. A one-minute video is being posted everyday till February 28 started from Monday. This is for every age group," the officer said. Interspersed with music and message, the video talks about creative awareness in a comic way so that it could reach to a bigger audience, they said. Jamia violence: Court discharges 11 accused, says booked as 'scapegoats'

A court here on Saturday discharged 11 people, including student activists Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha, in the Jamia Nagar violence case, saying as the Delhi Police was unable to apprehend the actual perpetrators, it booked the accused as "scapegoats". The court, however, ordered framing of charges against one of the accused, Mohammad Ilyas. Delhi B-school says defrauded by Arindam Chaudhuri of IIPM, charge denied

The Delhi-based Institute of Marketing and Management (IMM) has alleged that Arindam Chaudhuri of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) defrauded it by violating an admission agreement, misusing its name and collecting crores of rupees between 2011 and 2014. IIPM, however, contested the allegations and said it will soon move court seeking quashing of an FIR filed by the Delhi Police in the matter. The Delhi Police lodged the FIR against Chaudhuri and his associates on the directions of a local court based on the IMM's complaint. According to the FIR, IMM leased out the rear portion of the fourth floor and the entire fifth floor of its premises in the Qutub Institutional Area to IIPM in August 2011. Union Budget 2023-24: Centre allocates Rs 11,933 crore to Delhi Police

The Delhi Police has been allocated Rs 11,933.03 crore in the Union Budget for 2023-24, an increase of 15.22 per cent from the last fiscal, according to the official data released on Wednesday. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday presented the Union Budget for 2023-24. Delhi Police is responsible for maintaining and enforcing law and order in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The responsibility also includes traffic management in the city. The provision is for routine expenses as well as for various schemes to be implemented by Delhi Police such as developing traffic and communication networks in NCR mega cities and a model traffic system. Upgradation or expansion of communication infrastructure and training, induction of latest technology and installation of traffic signals, are some of the other works which come under the remit of the Delhi Police. Upset over delay, passenger falsely tweets flight hijacked; held in Delhi

A man was arrested for allegedly falsely tweeting that a flight going from Dubai to Jaipur had been hijacked, police said on Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday. Moti Singh Rathore, a resident of Nagaur in Rajasthan, arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after a Dubai-Jaipur was diverted to Delhi due to bad weather, Deputy Commissioner of Police (airport) Ravi Kumar Singh said. The flight landed at 9:45 am and was given clearance to depart at 1:40 pm. Meanwhile, Rathore tweeted "flight highjack", the police said. Rathore was offloaded from the flight with his bag and the flight was allowed to leave after the necessary checks. He was handed over to the local police for further action, they said. The accused told police that he posted the tweet as he was frustrated over the flight being stranded, they added. A case was registered in the matter and Rathore was arrested, the police said.

Police detain 4 SFI students for planning of screening BBC's doc on Jamia

The Delhi Police Wednesday said they have detained four students after the Left-affiliated Students' Federation of India (SFI) announcement plan to screen a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus. The university administration said the screening will not be allowed and that they are taking all measures to prevent people and organisations with a "vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university". A Delhi Police official said four SFI members were detained, just hours before the screening planned for 6 pm by the student body. The SFI called for a protest at 4 pm against the detention. Delhi Police files over 6600-page charge sheet in Mehrauli murder case

The Delhi Police on Tuesday filed a 6,629-page charge sheet against Aaftab Amin Poonawala in the Mehrauli murder case in the Saket court here which extended his judicial custody by two weeks to February 7. Poonawala is accused of strangling his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and chopping her body into pieces before dumping them in different parts of the city across several days. When Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla asked how many pages were there in the charge sheet, the investigating officer said it has 6,629 pages. "It is voluminous," the judge said. "The charge sheet has finally been placed before the court today," he added. The court extended Poonawala's judicial custody by 14 days till February 7. Poonawala was produced before the court through video conferencing on expiry of his judicial custody on Tuesday. He informed the court that he wanted to change his present advocate M S Khan.

Delhi Police intensifies security arrangements ahead of Republic Day

The Delhi Police have stepped up anti-sabotage checks, verification drives and patrolling in the national capital ahead of Republic Day to thwart any untoward incidents, officials said on Tuesday. Anti-sabotage checks are being conducted in markets, high footfall areas and other prominent places by the Bomb Disposal Team along with dog squads, police said. The police are checking hotels and lodges as well as sensitising the staff there to inform police immediately about any suspicious person or activity, they said. Delhi murder: Police prepares 3,000-page chargesheet, list of 100 witnesses

The Delhi Police has prepared a draft of 3,000 page-chargesheet containing a list of 100 witnesses in the grisly Shraddha Walkar murder case, sources said on Sunday. The draft chargesheet, likely to be filed soon, has been sent for legal opinion, they said. The chargesheet contains a list of forensic evidence that the police have collected apart from the DNA reports that established the identity of the victim. Walkar, 27, was allegedly strangled, her body chopped into 35 pieces and disposed of in various parts of Delhi by her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala. "The DNA reports had confirmed that it was indeed Shraddha Walkar who was killed. We collected samples from her father and brother after the incident came to light," a source said.
