Budget: 'Delhi got Rs 325 cr despite paying over Rs 1.75 trn tax', says CM

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said despite paying more than Rs 1.75 lakh crore income tax last year, the city was allocated only Rs 325 crore in the Union Budget 2023-24. Accusing the Centre of meting out step-motherly treatment to the national capital, he said the budget has offered no respite from the twin problems of inflation and unemployment. "Step-motherly treatment again with the people of Delhi. The people of Delhi paid more than Rs 1.75 lakh crore income tax last year. Out of that only Rs 325 crore was given for the development of Delhi. This is a gross injustice to the people of Delhi," Kejriwal said in a series of tweets. "There is no relief from inflation in this budget. On the contrary, this budget will increase inflation. There is no concrete plan to remove unemployment. Unfortunate to reduce education budget from 2.64 per cent to 2.5 per cent. Reducing health budget from 2.2 per cent to 1.98 per cent is harmful," he said. Finance Minister Nirmala

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday wrote to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena asking him to approve the government's proposal to send teachers of state-run schools to Finland for a training programme. The Delhi government had on January 20 sent the proposal to the Lt Governor''s Office to allow the teachers to visit Finland, days after Saxena asked the government to first conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the programme. In the letter, Sisodia said "politics" should not be played on "such sensitive issues'' and urged Saxena to clear the file. "The file has been doing the rounds in your office since October last year. The file was again sent to you on January 20 but there has been no decision yet," Sisodia wrote in the letter. "If the file is not cleared, the teachers' proposed training in March will also not happen," he said. Sharing the letter on Twitter, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also urged the LG to allow the teachers to attend the training programme. "I u

CM Arvind Kejriwal urges Centre to provide 1,300 MGD of water to Delhi

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Sunday urged the Centre to provide 1,300 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Delhi, saying it will help ensure round-the-clock water supply to the people in the city. The Delhi government is trying to increase water availability in the city, he said after inaugurating an 11 million litres capacity underground water reservoir in Patparganj village. "Delhi received 800-850 MGD water around 1997-98 when its population was around 80 lakh. It is still getting the same amount of water though the population has now tripled to 2.5 crore. With a slight nudge from the Centre, water can be made available from neighbouring states," the chief minister said. "We will supply round-the-clock water to each household in Delhi if the city is provided 1,300 MGD water by the Centre," he added. The chief minister also assured residents of Delhi that their water bills would be rectified in case of any anomaly and suggested they hold paying the charges till the correct

Delhi govt urges Centre to send 'funds' to bankroll G20 preparations

Ahead of the G20 Summit in September this year, the Delhi government has demanded that the Centre give funds to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to carry out works as part of preparations. "The Centre gives funds to local bodies and municipal corporations... There is a formula for it, funds are allocated to municipal corporations according to the population. "We have been demanding funds for the municipal corporation for six years. Delhi is the national capital, the G20 Summit is coming up. A large number of events will be held here and a lot of people will come. So, it is the Centre's duty to give funds to the municipal corporation," he said. He also demanded that the Centre increase goods and service tax (GST) compensation for Delhi. India's trade with China risen by 50% despite aggression: Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday slammed the BJP-led Centre for maintaining trade relations with China despite its aggressive stance, and called for its boycott to send out a strong message. Addressing a Republic Day function organised by the Delhi government at Chhatrasal Stadium here, Kejriwal alleged that China is procuring more weapons to use against India with the very money it earns doing trade with us. "A leading newspaper today reported that China has occupied some of our land. This is worrisome for every Indian. Our soldiers are bravely facing China at the border and it is our duty to support them in this fight. "It is our duty to boycott China and send out a strong message," he said at the event. The Chief Minister asked the central government what action it took against China's incursions into Indian territory and allegedly even occupying some of our land. "On one hand China is occupying our land and on the other hand we are increasing our trade with ..

AAP's protest at MCD House: Patriotic songs, snacks and camaraderie

Hot cups of chai, snacks, patriotic songs and dollops of camaraderie -- this is how AAP members sustained their nearly five-hour-long peaceful protest inside the chamber of the municipal House which failed to elect a mayor on Tuesday. Soon as the House was adjourned till a further date by presiding officer Satya Sharma around 3 pm, AAP members, including its 13 MLAs and three MPs, refused to budge from it, and accused the BJP of "running away from the mayoral poll". The protest was finally called off around 8 pm when party MP Sanjay Singh and MLA Durgesh Pathak addressed the AAP leaders, and asserted that their mayor and deputy mayor will be eventually elected. Earlier, the AAP members seemed to made merry while lodging a protest sitting in the Aruna Asaf Ali hall. Many councillors took turns to sing songs, largely patriotic numbers like 'Rang de Basanti', 'Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon' and 'Dil Diya Hai', and one member even recited 'Vande Mataram'. The House proceedings began around 1

LG bypassing Delhi govt in issuing prosecution sanction: Manish Sisodia

AAP leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday accused Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena of issuing prosecution sanction by bypassing the city government. He said this has led to a situation where those accused of committing serious offences against the State might walk away free. Sisodia said it is the elected government that issues a prosecution sanction. "Hon. LG's over-enthusiasm to bypass elected govt on every matter has created a crisis situation wherein many people accused of committing serious crimes against the state might go scot free," he said in a tweet. The LG has issued "invalid Prosecution Sanctions bypassing the elected government," he said, without elaborating. Under Section 196(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), a valid sanction for prosecution from the state government is a prerequisite for certain offences, Sisodia said. It includes offences like hate speech, hurting religious sentiments, hate crimes, sedition, waging war against s

Arvind Kejriwal asks Centre to take note of mass layoffs in tech firms

Expressing his concerns at the mass layoffs across several tech firms, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday asked the centre to assess the situation in the country and take right steps. Several multi nationals have retrenched in the recent past leading to job cuts in the US and other countries. "The youths are being retrenched in large numbers from the IT Sector. The Central government must review the Indian situation and take right steps," Kejriwal said in a Hindi tweet. Earlier this month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the company will lay off 10,000 workers, about five per cent of its total workforce, terming it a hard choice the tech giant had to make to remain a "consequential company" amid global economic uncertainties. Microsoft is the latest firm after Facebook and Amazon to cut jobs as the bloodbath in the technology sector continues in 2023. Describing the current times as a period of "significant change," Indian-origin Nadella said customers who ramped

Want Delhi govt schools to be world's best, says CM Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said he wants the city's government schools should be the best in the world so that students from abroad come here for education. Addressing teachers who had been to foreign countries for training, Kejriwal told them that he will keep sending them abroad and they have the support of the people of Delhi and the country. Some people consider it expenditure, but it is investment. I feel that you can construct four bridges less and four roads less, but we should provide best exposure and training to our teachers. They will groom students who will build roads and bridges in the future," he said. Lamenting that some people are trying to defame them, he alleged that there is a tendency to bring down those who do good work. There are people who see our good work and feel jealous. They want to defame us. But I am not interested in party politics. If some BJP person or Congress person wants to improve the education system somewhere in the countr
