BJP MPs protest against Rahul Gandhi's 'insulting' remarks on OBC-community

BJP MPs, mostly from Other Backward Classes, on Tuesday took out a march from Parliament complex to Vijay Chowk here protesting against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's comments on the 'Modi surname' and demanded his apology. Gandhi was convicted by a Surat court last week in a criminal defamation case for his 'Modi surname' remark. The ruling party's 'OBC Morcha' also announced a campaign between April 6, the party's foundation day, and April 14, B R Ambedkar's birth anniversary, against Gandhi's "insulting" remarks against the backward castes and to highlight the "historic" decisions of the Modi government for the community's welfare. BJP workers will reach out to one crore households across one lakh villages in the country, Morcha president K Laxman told reporters here. No proposal to hike OBC non-creamy layer income limit, govt told Lok Sabha

The existing annual income ceiling of Rs 8 lakh is "sufficient" to determine the OBC non-creamy layer status of community members, the Centre told Lok Sabha on Tuesday, clarifying that there is no proposal to increase the cap. The annual income limit to determine the non-creamy layer status for Other Backward Classes (OBC) has so far been revised four times, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar said in a written reply in the Lower House. Congress member Dean Kuriakose had sought to know if there was any proposal to increase the OBC non-creamy layer annual income limit from the current Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh before completion of the next financial year. "There is no proposal for revision of the OBC non-creamy layer limit since the existing income limit is considered sufficient," the minister said in his reply. Mahajyoti planning welfare schemes worth Rs 180 crore for OBCs: Minister

Welfare schemes worth Rs 180 crore have been planned in the current fiscal by Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Reasearch & Training Institute, better known as 'Mahajyoti', an autonomous body under the Maharashtra government's Other Backward Classes Bahujan Department, state minister Vijay Wadettiwar said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters here, the state social welfare minister also said two regional centres of Mahajyoti will come up in Aurangabad and Nashik by the end of October. He said funds will be allotted for skill training courses, competitive exam coaching, scholarships, fellowships, hostels and construction of administrative buildings in 2021-22.
