In view of a murder incident in Baljit Nagar, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday wrote a letter to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena appealing to him to take cognisance of his constitutional duty of maintaining public order. In the letter, he said the crime graph in the city has increased and it seems that Delhi has become the capital of crime. He also mentioned the worsening law and order situation in Delhi. "The constitution has given the responsibility to maintain law and order in Delhi to you (LG) and the police directly reports to you. I request you to kindly pay some attention towards this," Sisodia said in the letter. "If you dedicate some time in streamlining the deteriorating law and order situation in the city then it will benefit the general public of Delhi," he added. 5 ex-PFI activists booked under UAPA for involvement in unlawful activities

A case has been registered against five activists of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI) for their alleged involvement in unlawful activities after the raids conducted in their premises on October 13. The accused are from Jokatte, Kasba Bengre, Ullal, Kinya and Adyar, police sources said. The activists were charged under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and various sections of the IPC. The accused are being questioned, they said.

Assam govt to close around 300,000 petty crime cases for less judicial load

The Assam government has decided to withdraw around three lakh petty crime cases to reduce the load on the judiciary, a minister said. Addressing a press conference after a Cabinet meeting here on Sunday, Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said lakhs of petty cases are pending across the state. "We have decided to withdraw around three lakh of the 4.19 lakh petty crime cases, invoking Section 321 of the CrPC. This will reduce the backlog of cases and decongest jails," he said. The government will soon issue instructions and detailed standard operating procedures to the public prosecutor for filing appropriate petitions on the next dates of the respective cases, a Cabinet communiqu said. The Cabinet also approved the Assam State Policy for Transfer of Development Rights for streamlining the process of land acquisition for the redevelopment of inner-city zones. 82 murders a day, 11 kidnappings, abduction every hour in 2021: Govt data

An average of 82 people were murdered daily across India in 2021, while more than 11 kidnappings were reported every single hour during the year, according to latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. The rate of murder per one lakh population was highest in Jharkhand, while that of kidnapping and abduction in Delhi, NCRB's 'Crime in India 2021' report showed. A total of 29,272 cases of murder involving 30,132 victims were registered during 2021, showing a marginal increase of 0.3 per cent over 2020 (29,193 cases), showed the NCRB, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. While 1,01,707 cases of kidnapping and abduction involving 1,04,149 victims were registered during 2021, showing an increase of 19.9 per cent over 2020 (84,805 cases), nearly a lakh were "recovered" too, during the year, the data showed. Three people have been arrested here on Friday for attacking policemen, who had arrived to give a 'notice' related to a bypoll for the post of a village head, an official said. They tore a sub-inspector's uniform, opened fire at the policemen and pelted stones at them in Paigaon village under Shergarh police station area, the official said. Superintendent of Police (rural) Shrish Chandra identified the arrested men as Mohan, his brother Chandrapal and nephew Yuvraj. The exact cause for the attack on policemen was not revealed but the SP said Mohan got infuriated as sub-inspector Arjun Rathi and constable Sandeep Kumar reached his house to give the notice and he began hurling abuses at them.
