Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has issued the notification renaming the Chandigarh International Airport as Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport. On September 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Chandigarh airport will be renamed after Bhagat Singh as a tribute to the freedom fighter. The 115th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter was celebrated on September 28. On the same day, it was announced that the Chandigarh airport has been renamed after Bhagat Singh. In a notification dated November 2, MoCA said, "it is notified that the Chandigarh International Airport in Chandigarh is named as 'Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh' with immediate effect". An elaborate process is followed in naming and renaming of airports, and the final approval has to come from the Union Cabinet. Aviation regulator DGCA on Saturday said it will take suitable follow-up action after conducting a detailed probe into an incident of an IndiGo plane's engine catching fire at the Delhi airport. A Bengaluru-bound A320 ceo aircraft, carrying 184 people, aborted takeoff at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here due to fire in one of its engines Friday night. The plane returned to the bay and passengers were deboarded safely. "The priority is to carry out a detailed investigation of the incident and ascertain the reasons for the fire in the engine. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished swiftly and the aircraft is now grounded," DGCA chief Arun Kumar told PTI. He said the engine that caught fire was an IAEV2500. It is manufactured by IAE International Aero Engines AG. India is expected to see a total of 400 million air travellers in the next 7 to 10 years, Civil Aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Tuesday. He also said there are tremendous growth opportunities for domestic airlines and they are expected to have a fleet of 1,200 planes in five years. There were around 200 million air passengers, including domestic and international travellers, pre-pandemic and the number is expected to double to 400 million over the next 7 to 10 years, the minister said. Speaking at a conference organised by industry body Assocham, Scindia said the country is projected to have a total of 220 airports, including heliports and aerodromes, by 2026. The country's civil aviation sector is on the recovery path after being hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
The civil aviation minister also said the DGCA has target of carrying out 3,709 checks this year as part of its annual surveillance plan. Prior to coronavirus pandemic, target was around 2,775 checks.
