Cashew exports plunge deeper to 38% in September at $22.71 million

Contracting for the last eleven months, the country's cashew exports contracted by 38 per cent to USD 22.71 million in September succumbing to intense competition in the international markets. The exports have been declining since November last year, according to the data of the commerce ministry. The data showed that the exports dipped by 34 per cent in April, about 30 per cent in May, about 6 per cent in June, 26.62 per cent in July and 31.5 per cent in August. Karnataka Cashews Manufacturers Association Vice President Tukaram Prabhu said that withdrawal of export incentives under 'Vishesh Krishi and Gram Udyog Yojana' too is impacting the outbound shipments. "At present, we have no incentives to push shipments, though there is good demand in global markets. Our quality is much better than Vietnamese cashew. Cashew exports to US declined from FY14 to FY18 as Vietnam stole the show

Indian exports of Cashew Kernels to USA has declined from 33,898 metric tonne (MT) at Rs 15.05 billion in 2013-14, to 13,179 MT at Rs 9.06 billion in 2017-18. During 2013-14, US was the largest export destination for cashew kernels exporters from India.The decline has also been evident in European countries and in other traditional strongholds, with the competitors like Vietnam offering same quality products at a lower rate. The Cashew Exports Promotion Council of India has said that it is looking at marketing strategies to recapture the lost share in these traditional markets.Exports of cashew kernels to US was around 33,898 MT at a value of Rs 15.05 billion in 2013-14, which has come down to 13,179 MT at Rs 9.06 billion in 2017-18. Cashew exporters seek govt support despite record production, lower prices

The production of raw cashew nuts in India during 2017-18 has increased to all time high at 817 thousand tons resulting in lower price locally but exporters have not benefited from low cost cashew to increase export. The major issue is increasing competition from countries like Vietnam and Thailand in the global market. Exporters say that lower price in domestic market due to high production is not helping and margins in exports are shrinking and Government should provide incentives to help retain market share.The Indian exporters have exported around 84,354 tonnes of cashew kernels in 2017-18, with a 2.49 per cent increase from the 82,302 tonnes of exports during the previous financial year.
