Over 24,600 uncovered villages to get BSNL 4G service by December 2023

Over 24,600 uncovered villages, mostly located in remote and far-flung areas, are expected to be get BSNL 4G services by December 2023, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said on Tuesday. Elaborating on work being carried out by the department in tribal areas on the eve of 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas', DoT said it has several schemes that have been providing telecom infrastructure and connectivity in areas having a sizable tribal population. "Under the saturation scheme for providing 4G mobile services in 24,680 uncovered villages, many of which are in remote, rural and far flung areas, a project is being executed by BSNL and slated to be completed by December, 2023," DoT said in a statement. The department said that 2,343 mobile towers have been installed in such areas in states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal under Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-I scheme. BSNL lists 13 properties on MSTC website for auction in five states

State-run telecom firm BSNL has partnered with MSTC to auction 13 surplus properties situated at prime locations in five states, the company said on Monday. The company has invited bids by December 5 for sale of 13 properties in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, BSNL said in a statement. "BSNL has entered into an agreement with MSTC for online sale of properties through MSTC portal," the public sector telecom firm said. Loss-making BSNL had identified 14 properties worth Rs 20,160 crore and submitted the list for sale to the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) as part of the telecom corporation's ambitious asset monetisation plans. In October 2019, the government had approved a Rs 69,000-crore revival package for BSNL and MTNL that includes merging the two loss-making firms, monetising their assets and giving VRS to employees so that the combined entity turns profitable in two years. Jio topples BSNL to become largest fixed-line service provider in August

Private telecom operator Reliance Jio toppled state-run BSNL in August to become the largest fixed-line service provider in the country, according to a Trai report released on Tuesday. This is the first time since the beginning of telecom services in the country that a private operator has gained the numero uno position in the wireline segment. According to Trai's subscriber report for August, Jio's wireline subscriber base reached 73.52 lakh while that of BSNL was at 71.32 lakh. BSNL has been providing wireline services since the last 22 years, whereas Jio launched its wireline offering 3 years ago. The wireline subscribers in the country grew to 2.59 crore in August from 2.56 crore in July. The growth was dominated by the private sector, with Jio adding 2.62 lakh new customers, Bharti Airtel 1.19 lakh, Vodafone Idea (Vi) 4,202 and Tata Teleservices 3,769. BSNL to start rolling out 4G network from November, says CMD at IMC

State-owned telecom firm BSNL will start rolling out 4G network from November onwards and gradually upgrade it to 5G by August next year, a top company official said on Monday. The company has plans to roll out almost 1.25 lakh 4G mobile sites in 18 months, BSNL chairman and managing director PK Purwar told PTI at India Mobile Congress. "The first roll out (of planned 4G network) should take place in November," Purwar said. The company is in discussion with IT major TCS and state-run telecom research and development organisation C-DOT-led consortium to deploy indigenously developed 4G technology in the network. Purwar said the 4G network gears that the company is purchasing will be upgradable to 5G through software updates. Telecom user base grows to 1.17 bn with Jio taking lead in new addition

Telecom subscriber base in the country grew marginally to 117.29 crore in June with Reliance Jio adding maximum number of new customers, according to data released by sector regulator Trai on Wednesday. There were 117.07 crore subscribers in May 2022. "The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,170.73 million at the end of May 2022 to 1,172.96 million at the end of June 2022, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.19 per cent," Trai said in the report. The wireless subscriber base grew to 114.73 crore in June from 114.55 crore in May. Reliance Jio's wireless subscriber base grew to 41.3 crore with net addition of 42.23 lakh customers.
