Former Bengal minister criticise Centre for rising exports from China

In the backdrop of China's rising exports to India, former West Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra Thursday took a dig at the Centre's dependence on trade with that country and termed it as a threat to the nation's security. Mitra, who is currently the principal chief adviser to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, predicted that India's dependence on imports from China is set to double that of 2014. "The dependence of India on China will widen Chinese premier Xi Jinping's Mona Lisa smile in the coming G20 summit in New Delhi September next year''. Chinese exports to India has witnessed a rise of about 31 per cent. "Modi regime's 'China nirbhar' (dependence on China) is a threat to India's national security. India's dependence on imports from China is set to double since 2014 ($60 billion to $120 billion in 2022). Now you can read more into Xi's 'Mona Lisa 'smile' at Modi at G-20," Mitra tweeted. BJP government transformed education sector in Gujarat, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat has transformed the education sector in the state and made it more scientific and modern, touching upon an election issue which is being aggressively pushed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Addressing a rally in Dehgam town of Gandhinagar district, his third of the day, ahead of the next month's Assembly polls, the PM pointed out that Gujarat's education budget has now gone up to Rs 33,000 crore, more than the total budget outlay of several states. Notably, the comments the BJP's star campaigner on Gujarat's education scenario came at a time when the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has been aggressively pitching the 'Delhi model' of education and has promised to transform government-run schools if voted to power in the state. "Nearly 20 to 25 years back, Gujarat's budget allocation for education was just Rs 1,600 crore. Today, it stands at Rs 33,000 crore, more than the total budget outlay of

BJP committed to bring UCC once democratic debates are concluded: Amit Shah

The BJP is committed to bring Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after all democratic debates and discussions are concluded, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday. When asked about UCC, Shah said it is the BJP's promise to the people of this country, right from the Jan Sangh days. "Not only BJP, the Constituent Assembly had also advised the Parliament and states to bring UCC at an opportune time, because for any secular country, laws should not be on the basis of religion. If nation and state are secular, how can laws be based on religion? For every believer, there should be one law passed by the Parliament or the state Assemblies," Shah said at the Times Now Summit. This commitment of the Constituent Assembly was forgotten over a period of time, he claimed. "Except the BJP, no other party is in favour of the Uniform Civil Code. In a democracy, healthy debate is a necessity. There is a need for open and healthy debate on the issue," he said. The Home Ministry said in three BJP rule

MCD Polls: BJP failed, Delhi will give befitting reply, says Sisodia

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Wednesday said the people of Delhi would give a "befitting response" to the BJP, which had "failed" to perform its primary responsibility during its 15-year tenure in charge of the civic body. The BJP has been in power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) -- trifurcated in 2012 into north, south and east corporations and then unified this year -- for three straight terms. Addressing public meetings at wards in Harkesh Nagar, Pul Prahladpur and Tughlakabad, Sisodia said citizens of the national capital were "fed up" with the civic body and would choose the party that worked for development this time. "Citizens have been saying that the BJP has been cheating the public for the last 15 years in the MCD. The people are also fed up with their garbage mismanagement. This time, the people will choose the party that works for development," he said. The AAP on Wednesday kicked off the second phase of its campaigning for the MCD elections with music

BJP indulging in political 'horse-trading' in Telangana: TRS' K Kavitha

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's daughter and MLC K Kavitha on Wednesday accused the BJP of intimidating TRS leaders and using "horse-trading" tactics to lure them into the saffron party. Addressing TRS cadres at a meeting in Yellareddy assembly constituency, she said the only policy that BJP preaches is 'Ram-Ram Japna, Paraya Leader Apna', where if the party fails in its horse trading attempts, it uses central agencies to harass leaders of opposition parties. Indirectly referring to some BJP leaders who did not appear before the SIT which is probing into the TRS MLAs poaching case, Kavitha said that despite summons being issued, if the BJP did no wrong why were they evading the investigating panel and knocking the doors of courtroom. She further said the BJP does not have any organisational strength in Telangana and they are misusing their power and money to threaten leaders of other parties to join them. "We are the people of Telangana, we cannot be threatened - we

BJP creating confusion in J-K to rule directly from Centre: JKPCC president

Pradesh Congress Committee president Vikar Rasool Wani on Wednesday accused the BJP of creating an atmosphere of confusion in the union territory so that it can rule it directly from the Centre. "The BJP is indulging in falsehood and promotion of hate politics in the country in order to divert people's attention from its failures for the sake of power while adding more confusion in J&K aiming to continue ruling it directly from the Centre," Wani said at the party workers' convention at the Valtengo area in Kulgam district. Wani blamed BJP the government for the losses caused to J&K due to the "wrong policies adopted by it (BJP) while having failed people miserably on developmental, economic, employment and various other fronts". Kejriwal should apologise to nation, dismiss Jain: BJP on Tihar video

The BJP demanded on Tuesday that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should apologise to the nation and dismiss his jailed minister Satyendar Jain over fresh allegations related to a massage video. The tirade came after sources claimed that the masseur, who was seen in video footage giving a massage to Jain, was not a physiotherapist, but an inmate who is lodged in the Tihar Jail in a rape case. The Aam Aadmi Party, which drew flak over the videos, had asserted earlier that Jain was receiving physiotherapy in the jail, where he is in judicial custody for the past five months over money laundering charges. At a press conference around afternoon, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia dared Kejriwal to respond to the fresh allegations "within an hour". He termed the AAP an "arajak aparadhi' party (anarchist criminal party), accusing it of defending the wrongdoing in the jail. "Arvind Kejriwal should apologise to the entire nation," Bhatia said.
