Meghalaya govt took Rs 1,500 cr loan to give to farmers ahead of polls: BJP

The BJP on Friday accused Meghalaya's National People's Party (NPP)-led government of availing a loan of Rs 1,500 crore to distribute to farmers under a scheme ahead of the assembly elections due next year. State BJP chief Ernest Mawrie also alleged that the NPP is trying to show the beneficiaries that it is the programme of the ruling party. The saffron party's accusations came three days after Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma distributed Rs 5,000 each to more than 53,000 farmers of the state under the Focus+ scheme, under which peasants who are part of a group of producers get the money. Efforts to reach government officials or senior party leaders for comments did not fructify. Mawrie claimed that the Conrad Sangma government had taken a loan of over Rs 1,500 crore from foreign investors to woo voters ahead of the elections. "I request the people of the state to be careful because you may receive Rs 5,000 but in future, you will have to repay back the loan with interest a

BJP demands Swati Maliwal's removal after court orders framing of charges

The BJP on Friday demanded that Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena remove Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal after a court ordered framing of charges against her in connection with appointments to the panel. A city court on Thursday ordered framing of corruption and criminal conspiracy charges against Maliwal and others for "prima facie" abusing their official positions to appoint AAP workers to different posts in the women's rights body. In a letter to Saxena, the BJP's West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma demanded Maliwal's removal from her position. "I request you to take immediate action against Swati Maliwal for her unconstitutional action and remove her from the position of Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chairperson," Verma said. In an "alleged plot", Maliwal and others appointed AAP workers to various positions in the women's panel without following the proper procedures, Verma said. Adesh Gupta, the BJP's Delhi unit chief, alleged in a tweet that the AAP seemed not to

Gujarat: Month after bridge collapse, BJP wins Morbi by over 62k votes

The collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat's Morbi town that claimed 135 lives did not affect the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) winning streak in the constituency as its candidate won by more than 62,000 votes. Five-time MLA Kantilal Amrutiya's victory margin on Thursday was almost 15 times that of Brijesh Merja who had won by 4,600 votes in the 2020 byelection on a BJP ticket. This time, Amrutiya managed to win more than 1.14 lakh votes, while his closest rival, the Congress's Jayantilal Patel, received 52,000 and the Aam Aadmi Party's Pankaj Ransariya got nearly 17,500 votes. Amrutiya shot to nationwide fame when videos showing him jumping into the river to rescue people after the bridge collapse on October 30 went viral. He was hailed as Morbi hero. While Amrutiya had won from Morbi five times in the past (he had lost in 2017 and 2020), Congress's Jayantilal Patel had lost five times to his BJP rivals earlier. The contest turned triangular this time with the AAP fielding .

MCD mayor to be from AAP, BJP to play role of 'strong oppn': Adesh Gupta

The MCD mayor will be from the AAP and the BJP will play the role of a "strong opposition", the party's Delhi president Adesh Gupta said on Friday. The BJP will also resist the AAP if it indulges in any "corruption", he said. Gupta's statement comes amid speculation that the BJP will contest the mayoral polls in the newly elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). "We will play the role of a strong opposition in the MCD to save Delhi from the AAP, which has become synonymous with corruption," Gupta said during a press conference while thanking BJP leaders and activists for helping the party win 104 wards in the civic elections. The AAP on Wednesday wrested power from the BJP in the high-stakes civic polls in the national capital. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party bagged 134 of the 250 wards while the BJP won 104.

Odisha CM Patnaik attempting to garner sympathy ahead of 2024 election: BJP

Senior BJP leader Jay Narayan Mishra on Friday rejected BJD president Naveen Patnaik's "anti-women" jibe at the saffron party and said the chief minister's statement was not based on facts, but an attempt to garner sympathy of women ahead of 2024 general elections. Patnaik in a video message immediately after the victory of BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha in Padampur on Thursday, had accused the state BJP leadership of disrespecting a grief-stricken woman who had recently lost her father. "I was hurt by the disrespect shown by the BJP towards the rookie nominee Barsha," he said. Bariha scored an emphatic win against BJP's Pradip Purohit by 42,679 votes. Mishra, the Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly in a statement claimed that Patnaik has an old habit of creating new stories for getting sympathy. "If the Chief Minister's claim that BJP is anti-women was true, today Narendra Modi would not have established himself as the chief servant of the country, BJP would not have won in

Himachal polls: Rebels played spoilsport in 12 out of 68 assembly seats

Rebels played a spoilsport for both the BJP and Congress in 12 out of the 68 assembly segments in Himachal Pradesh. The rebels, who contested as independents in the assembly polls, marred the prospects of BJP candidates in eight seats while Congress candidates were hit in four assembly segments. Out of the total 99 independents who were in the fray, 28 were rebels. All the three winning Independents -- K L Thakur from Nalagarh, Hoshiyar Singh from Dehra and Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur -- were BJP rebels who were denied party tickets. Thakur had won in 2012 but lost in 2017 and the BJP chose to field Lakhwinder Singh Rana, a two-term Congress MLA, who jumped ship ahead of the elections. Singh, sitting independent MLA from Dehra had joined the BJP on the eve of assembly elections but the party gave ticket to Ramesh Dhawala while Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur was also a BJP rebel. The rebels spoiled the prospects of the BJP in Kinnaur, Kullu, Banjar, Indora and Dharamshala, while the .

Most exit polls get Guj result right, fail to call HP elections correctly

All exit polls predicted a BJP win in Gujarat but only a few got its scale right, while for Himachal Pradesh, most pollsters got it wrong as they failed to predict a Congress win. The BJP posted a historic victory in Gujarat, winning 156 seats in the 182-member state assembly. The Congress party finished second, winning a paltry 17 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party bagged just five. The Aaj Tak-Axis My India exit poll nearly got it right as it had predicted 129-151 seats for the BJP, 16-30 seats for the Congress and 9-21 seats for the AAP. News 24-Today's Chanakya also was close in its prediction as it had projected an average of 150 seats for the BJP, 19 for the Congress and 11 for the AAP. Both pollsters were a little off the mark in predicting the AAP's seats. All pollsters called the result right but failed to accurately predict the scale. While ABP News C-Voter had predicted 128-140 seats for the BJP, 31-43 for the Congress and 3-11 for the AAP, the News X-Jan Ki Baat exit pol

Gujarat polls: Away in 2017, Patidars back BJP to the hilt in 2022

The Patidar community, a section of which had voted against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2017 Assembly polls held in the backdrop of the quota agitation in Gujarat, returned to the ruling outfit in the just concluded polls as it won almost all the seats dominated by the influential social group in 2022. The BJP has done extremely well in the Patidar-dominated constituencies of the state, winning almost every seat that has significant Patel population. Polling for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly took place on December 1 and 5, and votes were counted on December 8. In the Saurashtra region, the Congress had won Patidar-dominated seats of Morbi, Tankara, Dhoraji and Amreli, among others in 2017. However, all these Assembly segments this time went in the BJP's kitty. In Patidar-dominated Surat, where the AAP was banking on the community to bag a few seats, the social group by and large backed the ruling party. The saffron outfit won Patidar seats of Varachha Road, Katargam

Confident of getting MCD mayor's chair as numbers are on our side: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday said it was confident that its councillor would be elected as the next mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi since the numbers were "on their side". Sources in the party said they were also keeping a keen eye on the BJP. This comes after senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Wednesday alleged that the BJP had made attempts to poach its newly elected councilors. The AAP on Wednesday wrested power from the BJP in the high-stakes civic polls in the national capital, even as some leaders of the saffron party claimed that its member could be elected to the top post. The municipal polls were held on December 4 and the AAP bagged 134 of the 250 wards, emerging as a clear winner. Amid all this, the party even had plans to take its councillors to Punjab to ensure that they are not "poached" by the BJP but the plan was cancelled, sources claimed. The MCD will be approaching Delhi LG VK Saxena to seek a date on which the Municipal House can be convened so

AAP made 'impressive entry' in Gujarat, gave tough fight to BJP: Italia

The Aam Adami Party has made an "impressive entry' into the Bharatiya Janata Party's bastion of Gujarat, giving a "tough fight" to the ruling outfit in the just concluded Assembly polls, state AAP president Gopal Italia said on Thursday. The Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit contested 181 out of the total 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat, but end up winning just five seats on Thursday, securing about 13 per cent vote share. Italia termed the AAP's win in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state as "victory of Kejriwal's politics of honesty" and vowed to make the party a "formidable challenger" of the BJP in Gujarat in the coming years. "It's a historic day as the Aam Adami Party today made an impressive entry into Gujarat, which is the BJP stronghold. We gave a tough fight to the rival and won five seats. It's a revolution in Gujarat and victory of Arvind Kejriwal's honest politics," he said at a press conference in Surat. The AAP's Gujarat unit chief, who contested from the Katargam Assemb
