Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said the state budget is likely to be presented on February 17, and asserted that it would be "pro-people". The upcoming budget will focus on programmes that would give more support to working classes, women and youth, he said listing out some government schemes that are being implemented in the state. Bommai, who also holds the Finance portfolio, will be presenting the budget. The upcoming budget is important for the ruling BJP as it will be the last one ahead of assembly elections by May. "During the next cabinet meeting, we will decide on the dates for joint session of Karnataka legislature and for the budget session. Budget is likely to be presented on February 17. All the preparations for it has begun," the Chief Minister said. Speaking to reporters here, he said the state's revenue collection for the quarter ending December has crossed the target, and that he has given directions regarding the targets for the last quarter

AAP protests outside BJP office over Dhaula Kuan slum-demolition order

Aam Aadmi Party workers on Saturday staged a protest outside the Delhi BJP office, days after the city government directed its Public Works Department to immediately withdraw an order to demolish slums located near Dhaula Kuan. The PWD had on December 29 issued a notice asking slum dwellers in the Dhaula Kuan area to vacate the land within 15 days. AAP MLA Somnath Bharti asserted that his party won't let anybody's house get demolished. "What is wrong with BJP? Why are they acting against the people of Delhi?" Another MLA Aadil Ahmad said the party's agitation against the demolition order will be taken to the streets near Parliament as well. "It was in the BJP's manifesto that all slum dwellers will be given a house at the same place where slums are. But now, they are sending notices to demolish slums," he said. The Delhi government, in its notice directing the PWD to withdraw the demolition order, said it was "inhuman" to do so at the peak of winter and without making an alternate

Amid a tussle between the DMK-led government and Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday accused the BJP of using governors as 'karyakartas' (party workers) and said that the "brazen overstepping of the Constitution" by a few of them recently has sullied federal structure of Indian polity. Ravi had a face-off with the state government in the Assembly where Chief Minister M K Stalin, also president of the ruling DMK, piloted a resolution against the Governor's deviation from his customary address to the house. Delhi BJP runs banner campaign against AAP over MCD meeting disruption

The Delhi BJP on Wednesday led a citywide banner campaign against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party for allegedly disrupting the maiden meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi last week. "The banner campaign is being led to protest the unruly behaviour of the newly-elected MCD councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who did not allow the councillors to take oath," Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva said. The meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on January 6 was adjourned without electing the mayor and deputy mayor as the BJP and AAP councillors exchanged heated words and came to blows over presiding officer Satya Sharma administering oath to the aldermen first and not the elected representatives. Only four aldermen could take oath before the House plunged into chaos. The AAP alleged that the BJP made the aldermen take oath first in order to get them voting rights for the mayor and deputy mayor elections.
