Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday hinted that action may be taken against senior woman IAS officer Harjot Kaur Bumrah whose indiscretion during a recent interaction with school girls has caused a major embarrassment for his government. The officer has, meanwhile, issued a signed statement expressing regret over the controversy that arose after a purported video footage of the September 27 function went viral on social media. Kumar, who was approached by journalists with queries about the National Commission for Women (NCW) slapping a notice on Bumrah, said, "Orders are in place to inquire into the issue which I learnt about through newspapers. We are committed to providing all assistance to the state's women. If the IAS officer's behaviour is found to be against that spirit, action will be taken." The Bihar cabinet on Tuesday approved proposals for creating around 7,800 new posts in different departments of the state government, officials said. Among these are 7,595 additional posts of 'surveyors' and 'amins' in the Revenue and Land Reforms Department. Besides, 200 additional posts for two prisions in Arwal district, and Paliganj sub-division in Patna district, and 27 posts in the Art and Culture Department will be created, they said. The cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved the proposals at a meeting, they added. Last week, the state cabinet approved proposals for creating around 8,000 new posts in different government medical colleges and hospitals of the state. In his Independence Day speech, the chief minister had announced that his government would provide jobs to 20 lakhs youths, and half of them will get jobs in the government sector.

Police have arrested four wanted Maoists from Aurangabad district, during a joint operation of security forces of Bihar and Jharkhand, officials said Friday. The arrested Naxals include Vinay Yadav, the regional commander' of the CPI (Maoist), who was carrying a reward of Rs 18 lakh on his head, they said. Police also recovered Rs 20 lakh in cash from their possession. Acting on a tip-off, security personnel had launched a search operation in some forested areas of the district, said Aurangabad SP Kantesh Kumar Mishra. These Maoists were involved in many crimes. Arms and ammunition have also been recovered from their possession, he said. The Supreme Court on Monday said the Bihar Cricket Association cannot amend its own constitution and directed it to file an affidavit explaining the mechanism it is following for its elections scheduled on September 25. A bench of justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli asked the cricket body to clarify if it has changed the constitution of electoral college for the purpose of elections. "You can certainly hold the election, but you cannot amend the constitution. You file a short affidavit explaining what steps you are taking. We will record your undertaking in those terms that you will not give effect to amendment for elections," the bench observed. The top court said it would hear the matter on Friday. Eleven people died due to lightning and thunderstorms in various parts of Bihar on Monday, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announcing an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the family members of each of the victims. The CM, in a statement issued during the day, said four people each died in Purnea and Araria and 3 in Supaul due to thunderstorm and lightning. "My deepest condolences to the affected families. An ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh will be given immediately to the next of kin of all the deceased," he said. One person was killed and 11 others critically injured as two motorcycle-borne gunmen went on a rampage in Bihar's Begusarai district, firing indiscriminately at people in crowded areas, police said. The assailants are yet to be identified, they said. The gunmen opened fire at Malhipur Chowk in Begusarai town on Tuesday evening, targeting shops in the busy area, a police officer said. Panicked people started running for their lives, while shopkeepers fled leaving shops open. The miscreants then went to Barauni Thermal Chowk, Barauni, Teghra, Bachwara and Rajendra Bridge, and continued firing at people, he said.
