IT firms resort to work-from-home as Bengaluru rain fury intensifies

India's best-known IT firms and startups have asked staff to work from home as torrential rains brought chaos on streets of the technology hub, marooning roads and snapping water and electricity supplies. While parts of the city that houses several global companies and home-grown startups, were under water, operations in IT firms and startups were largely unaffected as most of them had power backup and a hybrid work environment where some employees logged in from home. But some of the posh housing colonies were flooded and tractors were pressed into service to rescue residents. As rains disrupted traffic and threw lives out of gear, footages of IT workers travelling in tractors to reach workplace amid heavy waterlogging in the city, also surfaced on social media platforms. "All our associates at Bengaluru are safe. We are closely monitoring the situation and our delivery teams have been advised to exercise due caution," a spokesperson of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said. It ..

Perform or face election: Shivakumar to CM Bommai on Bengaluru rain woes

Hitting back at Karnataka Chief Minister for blaming previous Congress governments' 'maladministration' for Bengaluru's rain woes, party's state president D K Shivakumar on Tuesday urged Basvaraj Bommai and his administration to perform or face election. He also alleged that the "corrupt" BJP government and its officials were responsible for Bengaluru's current situation. "If there were encroachments during the Congress tenure, let them (BJP) clear it, they had earlier got five years' time, they had now got five years, they should have done it...not performing while in power and blaming previous Congress governments instead is not right," Shivakumar said, reacting to the Chief Minister's statement. Speaking to reporters here, he said, such a situation had never arisen during the Congress' tenure. "It is because of your corruption and corruption by your officials. The Chief Minister has to bear this in mind. People have given you an opportunity. In case you are not able to perform,

Water-logging in localities like Rainbow Drive layout, Sunny Brooks Layout, some areas on Sarjapur Road were to such an extent that tractors and boats were used to ferry students and office goers in the morning. The flood on August 30 which brought parts of Bengaluru to its knees led to a loss of about Rs 225 crore on a single day, the Information Technology and banking companies said in their letter to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai seeking his attention to address the "appalling infrastructure" of the city. In a letter to Bommai dated September 1, the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) said half-a-million professionals are employed along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) between Central Silk Board and Krishnaraja Puram corridor. President of the ORRCA Manas Das and vice-president Archana Tayade said this corridor measuring about 17 km provides employment to close to one million people. Karnataka CM blames 'negligence' of previous govts for deluge in Bengaluru

Days after several residential areas in the city saw inundation and waterlogging due to torrential rains, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday accused the previous governments in the state of having 'neglected' Bengaluru. The Chief Minister also took the officials to task for turning a blind eye to the rampant encroachment of stormwater drains by property developers. For the past eight to 10 years, Bengaluru was completely neglected. There was not any major problem before the previous governments, but they did not do. The works executed were of substandard quality. Because of their poor work, we are suffering today, Bommai said. He was addressing ministers and officials after inspecting the rain hit areas of the city, where many vehicles were submerged, and water entered many houses while many residential layouts resembled a lake or river. The negligence of previous governments, substandard work and corruption has resulted in so much of problem. I can give with ...

No Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru, orders SC

The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to grant permission for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru and ordered status quo on land by both parties. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Indira Banerjee asked the parties to approach the Karnataka High Court for the resolution of the dispute. "The issues raised in the Special Leave Petition may be agitated by both parties before the High Court. In the meanwhile, the status quo as of today will be maintained by both sides.
