Australia updates telecom law to protect customers' data after Optus hack

The Australian government announced changes Thursday to its telecommunications law to protect vulnerable customers after personal details were stolen in a major cyberattack on the nation's second-largest wireless carrier. The changes to Telecommunications Regulations allow Optus and other providers to better coordinate with financial institutions and governments to detect and mitigate the risk of cybersecurity incidents, fraud, scams and other malicious cyber activities, Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said in a joint statement. What this is all about is to try and reduce the impact of this data breach on Optus customers and to enable financial institutions to implement enhanced safeguards and monitoring, Rowland told reporters. More than one in three Australians had personal data stolen when Optus lost the records of 9.8 million current and former customers including passport, driver's license and national health care identification numbers in a

Australian hacker who breached 10 mn people's data concealed their identity

The computer hacker who stole personal data of almost 10 million customers of a telecommunications company in one of Australia's worst privacy breaches used techniques to conceal their identity, actions and whereabouts, police said on Friday. Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Justine Gough, who heads cyber investigations, said the international probe, that includes the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, into the Optus cyberattack last week would be long and complex. "You can be assured that our very clever and dedicated cyber investigators are focused on delivering justice for those whose personal information has been compromised, Gough said. The government blames lax cybersecurity at Optus, Australia's second-largest wireless carrier, for the theft of current and former customers' personal information. Cybersecurity Minister Clare O'Neil described the crime as quite a basic hack. She said Optus, a subsidiary of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, also known as Singte

Most Australian High Court judges to be women for the first time in history

Most judges sitting on Australia's highest court will be women for the first time in the institution's 121-year history, the attorney-general said on Thursday. Justice Jayne Jagot will fill a High Court vacancy on its seven-judge bench when Justice Patrick Keane retires Oct. 17, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said. Jagot has been a Federal Court judge since 2008. Dreyfus said Jagot's gender did not figure in his decision to choose her after consultations with leading judges and lawyers. This was an appointment of the best possible person to the High Court," Dreyfus told reporters. Justice Jagot is an eminent jurist and brings tremendous experience and was nominated by very, very many people." Jargot will be the 56th judge and only the seventh woman to serve on the High Court since it was created in 1901. The four women to sit on the bench from next month will include Chief Justice Susan Kiefel. Keane leaves the bench after nine years and less than two weeks before he reaches the

India's focus on adaptability ahead of T20 World Cup: Arshdeep Singh

Young India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh said "adaptability" is the main focus of the team ahead of the T20 World Cup, starting later this month in Australia. The T20 World Cup will be held in Australia from October 16 to November 13, and Arshdeep said the Indian bowlers are geared up for the tough challenge that awaits them. "Adaptability is the big motive of our team. The main motive is adapting to the situations and demands of the team, whatever the situations and conditions are," said the 23-year-old pacer, who made a sensational comeback after a disappointing outing in the Asia Cup recently. "When we go there (Australia) we will see how the conditions are. I'm looking forward to doing well." Arshdeep (3/32) and Deepak Chahar (2/24) broke South Africa's backbone to help India register an easy eight-wicket win over the Proteas in the low-scoring first T20I of the three-match series here on Wednesday night. "We are trying to tick all the boxes in the practice sessions and tryin

David is versatile and adds to Australia's batting options: Aron Finch

Big-hitting Tim David is a "versatile and flexible" player and his presence only adds to the options that Australia possess going into the T20 World cup, feels skipper Aaron Finch. The Singapore-born batter, known from his explosive knocks, made his debut for Australia in the first T20. "What Tim brings to the table obviously is some great form in competitions around the world. In various batting positions I know in the PSL, he batted at 4 and had a great tournament, other tournaments, he batted five and six," Finch said. "So we see him as a really versatile and flexible player and obviously his power speaks for itself. "We've all seen how destructive he can be once he gets in and in terms of the order I think it just depends on the game situation, maybe, some matchups in the opposition as well." Talking about David's batting position, he said: "Ideally, it'd be right towards the back end because the top order has done a great job. "But I think if you look down our World Cup squa
