Nearly 10 dead, 55 wounded after Russian shells strike Ukraine's Kherson

Russian shells pummelled the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on Saturday, killing at least 10 people and injuring 55 in the city that Moscow's troops were forced to abandon last month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, just back from his quick trip to Washington, posted photos of the wreckage on his social media accounts. He noted the destruction came as Ukrainians were beginning Christmas celebrations that for many Orthodox Christians will culminate in the traditional celebration on January 7. This is not sensitive content it's the real life of Kherson, Zelenskyy tweeted. The images showed cars on fire, bodies on the street and building windows blown out. Yaroslav Yanushevych, the governor of the Kherson region, said in televised remarks that the number of people killed in the latest shelling of the city has risen from seven to 10. He added that 55 people were wounded, 18 of them in grave condition, including a 6-year-old child. Saturday marks 10 months since the star

Gunmen attack major Shiite holy site in Iran; 15 killed, dozens injured

Gunmen opened fire on Wednesday at a major Shiite holy site in the southern city of Shiraz, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens, according to state-run media. The official website of the judiciary says two gunmen were arrested and a third is on the run after the attack on the Shah Cheragh mosque. The state-run IRNA news agency reported the death toll and state TV said 40 people were wounded. The attack, which bore the hallmarks of Sunni extremists who have targeted the country's Shiite majority in the past, comes as Iran has been convulsed by over a month of anti-government demonstrations, the biggest challenge to the Islamic Republic in over a decade. Thousands of protesters poured into the streets of a northwestern city to mark the watershed 40 days since the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, whose tragedy sparked the protests. Deaths are commemorated in Shiite Islam as in many other traditions again 40 days later, typically with an outpouring of grief. In

At least 2 killed, 6 severely injured in stabbings along Las Vegas Strip

An attacker with a large kitchen knife killed two people and wounded six others in stabbings along the Las Vegas Strip before being arrested Thursday, police said. Three people were hospitalized in critical condition and another three were in stable condition, according to Las Vegas police who said they began receiving 911 calls about the stabbings around 11:40 am on the north end of the Strip. Police didn't immediately release any information on the suspect or a possible motive. Witnesses told Las Vegas TV stations that the attacker struck in multiple locations, and some of the victims appeared to be showgirls or street performers who take pictures with tourists on the Strip. The suspect told a woman that he was a chef who wanted to take a picture with some of the showgirls with his knife, but he started stabbing people when the group declined the man's offer, the woman told KTNV. Pierre Fandrich told KTNV that he did not see the stabbing suspect as he was walking along the Strip

'Sad, terrible, unjustifiable': Former Pak PM Imran Khan on Rushdie attack

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has termed the attempted murder of Salman Rushdie as terrible and sad, indicating that while the anger in the Islamic world at the Mumbai-born author's controversial novel The Satanic Verses was understandable, the act was unjustifiable, a media report said on Friday. Rushdie, 75, was stabbed by a 24-year-old New Jersey resident identified as Hadi Matar, a US national of Lebanese origin, on stage last week while he was being introduced at a literary event of the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York. He suffered three stab wounds to his neck, four stab wounds to his stomach, puncture wounds to his right eye and chest, and a laceration on his right thigh, Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt said during the suspect's arraignment. I think it's terrible, sad, Khan said in an interview to the Guardian newspaper, when asked for his response on Rushdie's assault. Rushdie understood, because he came from a Muslim family. He knows

4 people wounded by man on stabbing rampage in New Zealand: Official

A man wounded four people in a stabbing rampage Thursday in a New Zealand city before bystanders brought him to the ground, authorities said. Police District Commander Naila Hassan said the suspect in the Auckland attack was in custody. This was an extremely fast-moving incident, where our police staff responded quickly, apprehended the offender and prevented further harm to our communities, Hassan said. No motive for the attack was immediately apparent. New Zealand was the site of two violent stabbing rampages at supermarkets last year. One was considered a terror attack while a judge found no motive could be attached to the other attack. Last September, a Muslim extremist inspired by the Islamic State group stabbed five people in an Auckland supermarket before police shot and killed him. Three of those he stabbed were critically injured and two other people were also injured in the melee, but all survived. And in May last year, shoppers and staff at a Dunedin supermarket manage
