The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum here has fined online trade platform Amazon for selling knives above the maximum retail price. The Forum directed Amazon to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the complainant. The complainant approached the Forum saying he had purchased knife-set for Rs 215 after getting a discount of 45 per cent when the actual price listed was Rs 410. The complainant alleged that the knife cost only Rs 191.96 including tax. The Forum found that Amazon had violated the Consumer Protection Act and gave a fake advertisement. It said the online platform violated the provisions of the Act and was liable to pay compensation for unfair trade practice. V S Manu Lal, R Bindu and K M Anto of the Forum directed the online platform to repay the consumer excess amount of Rs 23.04 and nine per cent interest apart from the compensation.

Hawaiian Airlines will operate 10 cargo planes for Amazon.com starting next fall under a deal that could eventually involve more planes and give Amazon a 15% stake in the airline. The airline's parent company, Hawaiian Holdings Inc., said Friday that it will fly and maintain an initial fleet of 10 leased Airbus A330-300 jets for the retail giant. The fleet could grow depending on Amazon's future business needs, the company said. Hawaiian said it issued warrants that Amazon can exercise over the next nine years and acquire up to 15% of Hawaiian stock. Shares of Hawaiian Holdings jumped 13% in afternoon trading on Friday. Amazon is facing a USD 1 billion class action lawsuit in the U.K. over allegations it uses an algorithm to favour its own products and those of third-party sellers who use its storage and delivery services. The litigation is being spearheaded by the law firm Hausfeld & Co LLP, which said in a news release that anyone who lives in the U.K. and made purchases on Amazon since October 2016 is eligible to be a claimant. The suit is expected to be filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London by the end of October. The lawsuit will focus primarily on Amazon's Buy Box feature, a coveted spot that makes items more visible to shoppers and thereby lead to more sales for merchants listed there. The box features a product from a single seller, though many more might offer the same item. In the news release, the law firm detailed it will allege many users wrongly assume the buy box offers them the best deals, but Amazon uses a secretive algorithm to feature its own products or those sold .

Amazon has sued Washington state's labour agency following disputes with regulators over citations and fines imposed on the company for worker safety issues. In the lawsuit, filed on Monday in federal court for the Western District of Washington, Amazon asked a judge to prohibit orders from the Washington Department of Labor and Industries to remedy any types of workplace hazards during the company's pending appeal over the citations. Amazon argued in the lawsuit the agency has not proven any of its allegations, and requiring companies like it to remedy alleged hazards before that happens violates the due process protections under the 14th Amendment.
