Exit polls will be proven wrong, will return to rule MCD: BJP; AAP upbeat

Ahead of the counting of votes for the MCD polls, the BJP on Tuesday exuded hope that the tide will turn in its favour even as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed a "landslide" victory as predicted by exit polls. The exit polls on Monday showed that the AAP was going to sweep the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls by winning more than 150 of the 250 municipal wards with the BJP emerging a distant second. The results will be announced after counting of polled votes on all the 250 municipal wards on Wednesday. Voting for MCD elections was held on Sunday. The AAP leaders, who are in an upbeat mood after positive predictions, also claimed that the party will do better than exit poll trends. "We are expecting better results than what the exit polls predicted. These exit polls also show that people have rejected all the allegations leveled by the BJP (against AAP) and have voted for good work," Durgesh Pathak, AAP's MCD poll in-charge, told PTI. Delhi BJP alleges MCC violation by Kejriwal, files complaint with State EC

Delhi BJP on Friday alleged a Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal here and lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission. The alleged MCC violation took place at an event attended by Kejriwal in the Constitution Club. A case should be registered against Kejriwal for violating MCC, Ashish Sood, Delhi BJP's election campaign committee convener, said. "The Delhi Chief Minister openly violated the Model Code of Conduct in the programme. He organised the programme without any permission, for distributing cheques from foreign NGOs in the Constitution Club," Sood said. Sood also demanded action against the concerned district magistrate for not taking action to stop the programme for MCC violation. Kejriwal was present in the programme in which cheques were distributed to Yoga instructors as honorarium. He said at the event that free yoga classes in the city will continue irrespective of the availability of funds for the scheme. "Stopping yoga

BJP deployed 17 Union ministers to fight 'aam aadmi' in MCD, says Kejriwal

Ahead of the December 4 municipal polls, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday claimed the BJP has deployed 17 Union ministers to fight an 'aam aadmi' like him and said this was done to cover up the party's "inefficiency" during its tenure in the civic body. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls are being seen as a high stakes contest with the Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress eyeing to wrest it from the BJP which ruled it for 15 years. The AAP will get rid of corruption from the MCD in just three to four months, if voted to power and "mark my words, you will not need to pay an extra penny to get your work done in the MCD", asserted Kejriwal, who led a roadshow from Malka Ganj Chowk near Kamla Nagar to Ghanta Ghar Chowk. People gathered in large numbers and the stretch was dotted with blue, yellow and white as they danced and sang to the beats of drums while waving AAP flags. Kejriwal assured that all MCD employees will get their salary in the

Delhi excise policy a 'device' to generate illegal funds by AAP leaders: ED

AAP leaders, some of whom are part of the government, considered the Delhi excise policy as a "device" to generate illegal funds at the cost of the state exchequer, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) told a local court Wednesday. It also said that at least 36 accused, including Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and a PA of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, "destroyed or used" 170 phones in order to conceal evidence of "kickbacks" worth thousand of crores of rupees in the alleged scam. "The policy was formulated with deliberate loopholes, inbuilt mechanism to facilitate illegal activities and is marred with deliberate inconsistencies which when looked deeply, reflect malafide intentions of the policymakers. "This policy, though on the face of it, has promising and laudable objectives of stopping cartelisation and encouraging fair trade practices, in reality it promoted cartel formations through back door, awarded exorbitant wholesale (12 per cent) and huge retail (185 per cent)

Scuffle between workers of AAP and BJP during Kejriwal's Surat road show

A scuffle broke out between supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday during Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's roadshow in Surat city in poll-bound Gujarat. The incident occurred in Katargam locality in the evening after BJP workers chanted 'Modi, Modi' when the convoy of vehicles in Kejriwal's roadshow was passing through the area. Kejriwal claimed a stone was hurled when the roadshow was passing. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-3), Pinakin Parmar, said Kejriwal was provided Z-plus security in the 4-km roadshow with CAPF (Central Armed Police Force). "The rally passed off peacefully. No incident of hurling of stones took place. A minor scuffle broke out between party workers but the police controlled the situation," he said. "When we were moving, their (apparently referring to BJP) supporters threw a stone at us. I was thinking had they done any work in the last 27 years they would not have needed to throw stones. MCD polls: BJP emptied people's pockets instead of cleaning waste: Sisodia

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Saturday alleged that the BJP extorted money from people and emptied their pockets instead of cleaning the garbage in the city in the past 15 years. Holding street corner meetings at R K Puram, Munirka, Vasant Vihar, Mehrauli and Chhattarpur, Sisodia said the city residents are fed up with the BJP's incompetence in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and that they will vote to bring the AAP to the civic body. People will choose the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in MCD too to fasten the pace of development work across Delhi. The BJP extorted money from the common man and emptied their pockets. People are fed up with the BJP's incompetence and hence, they will vote for the AAP in the upcoming civic body polls, he underlined. The senior AAP leader further accused the saffron party of failing to perform its core functions in the last 15 years in MCD. The core responsibility of the BJP was to ensure cleanliness of parks, roads, bylanes, and sewers across

AAP focussed on expansion of liquor vends than education: Anurag Thakur

Top BJP leaders on Saturday slammed the AAP over the issues of corruption and pollution, with Union minister Anurag Thakur alleging that the Arvind Kejriwal government focused more on the expansion of liquor vends than education. Campaigning for the upcoming civic body polls here, Thakur claimed that Delhi is suffering due to the Kejriwal government's "corruption and false claims of development". Elections for the 250 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be held on December 4. "This is the first government in the country that has focused more on expansion of 'thekas' (liquor vends) than education and its minister, who is in jail and getting a massage there, has not yet been removed from his post," Thakur alleged while campaigning for BJP candidates in Shastri Nagar, Kamla Nagar and Rajendra Nagar wards here. He said the way Satyendar Jain was retained as a minister despite being in jail for nearly six months, showed that the Arvind Kejriwal government was not just ...

BJP will never implement Uniform Civil Code in Gujarat, alleges AAP

The BJP will never implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said on Saturday, dubbing the saffron party's poll promise as "fake". The reaction of the Arvind Kejriwal-led party came after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its manifesto for the Gujarat Assembly polls, promising the implementation of a UCC in the state if it retains power. "The BJP has ruled Gujarat for 27 years. After remaining at the helm for more than two decades, it is still making promises," the AAP's co-incharge for Gujarat, Raghav Chadha, told reporters here when asked for his party's view on the BJP's poll promise of implementing a UCC in the state. "If it was indeed their intent, they would have implemented it much ago," Chadha said, asking, "Why didn't they implement it?" "It is a fake promise. The BJP will never implement it (UCC)," he added. On October 29, the Gujarat government announced that it would form a committee for the implementation of a UCC. Other

Delhi court dismisses Satyendar Jain's plea seeking special food items

A Delhi court on Saturday dismissed a plea by jailed AAP minister Satyendar Jain seeking direction to Tihar officials to provide him special food items according to his religious beliefs. Special judge Vikas Dhull dismissed the application noting the jail administration's submission that no special facility is provided to any prisoner and Jain was allowed to avail all facilities under law, like other inmates. The application had also sought a direction to the prison officials to immediately conduct the minister's medical check-up. It had alleged that Jain was not being provided basic food and medical facilities inside the prison. The jail administration, however, had opposed the application, saying Jain was allowed to avail all facilities under law, like other prisoners. Jain was arrested in a money laundering case based on a CBI FIR lodged against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court had on November 17 refused bail to Jain and two others in the case. He

MCD polls: Where was CM for last 8 years, asks Gambhir on landfill issue

With the AAP turning the issue of landfill sites into a poll plank ahead of the municipal election in Delhi, BJP MP Gautam Gambhir has hit out at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, asking where was he for the last eight years when it came to finding a solution for the massive garbage dump in Ghazipur. The Ghazipur landfill site is a giant garbage dump in east Delhi. Talking to PTI, Gambhir, who represents the East Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha, blamed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for what he described as "a dismal state" of the national capital. He said the work done at the Ghazipur landfill site is an example of how a BJP-led MCD can "make a difference". The cricketer-turned-politician said in the last eight years, "we have only heard the Delhi chief minister blame the Centre for everything, but no one asked him what is his responsibility as the chief minister". He should come out and speak, Gambhir added. The people of Delhi can see it for themselves what the Ghazipur landfill

'AAP will solve Delhi's garbage problem in 5 years if voted to MCD'

AAP Delhi convener and minister Gopal Rai Friday asserted his party will solve the city's garbage management problem within five years, if voted to power in the MCD, saying the BJP failed in its 15-year-tenure in the civic body. The party released 'Kejriwal's 10 guarantees' for the December 4 MCD polls earlier this month with the promise to clear the three landfill sites and address the problem of garbage mismanagement in the capital. In an interview to PTI, Rai said, "It is not just AAP but the people of Delhi who have been raising this issue," when asked why is the party focussing on the issue of garbage menace. AAP's senior leader Atishi had earlier told PTI that the party will rope in international experts to find solutions to reducing the size of the three landfill sites. Rai concurred with her and said there are several countries that came up with technological solutions to garbage mismanagement. "I visited Sweden a while ago and it is a country that used to be polluted at a

Attempts made to frame Sisodia in fake excise scam case: Delhi CM

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the excise policy scam case "fake" on Friday and alleged that attempts were made to frame his deputy Manish Sisodia in it, whereas the CBI found nothing against him in its probe. "Manish's name is not in the CBI chargesheet. The whole case is fake. Nothing was found in the raids. A total of 800 officers found nothing in the probe for four months. Manish offered hope of a good future to crores of poor children in the country through a revolution in education. I am sorry that a conspiracy was hatched to defame such a person by implicating him in a false case," Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its first chargesheet in the excise policy scam case against seven accused, including two businessmen, on Friday. Besides the two arrested businessmen, the head of a television news channel, a Hyderabad-based liquor trader, a Delhi-based liquor distributor and two excise department officials have been ..

Not a country where one is told how to follow religion: Satyendar Jain

Jailed Aam Aadmi Party minister Satyendar Kumar Jain on Thursday told a Delhi court that "we're not a country where we are told how to follow a religion". Jain made the submission during the hearing of his application, in which he has alleged that the Tihar jail administration had stopped giving him the food allowed "as per law" during his religious fast. *He was arrested in a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) based on a CBI FIR lodged against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act.* "At least right now we're not a country where we are told how to follow a religion. Jain's continuance as minister 'shamelessness', unprecedented: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday termed the continuance of Aam Aadmi Party's jailed leader Satyendar Jain as a minister in the Delhi government as "shamelessness" and said such instances are unprecedented in public life. Videos of Jain have emerged purportedly showing him eating uncooked vegetables and fruits, getting massages and other special facilities in his Tihar prison cell. "I had also gone to jail and resigned as a minister. Later, we fought before the court and the court said it was a political conspiracy and the case is fake. If there is injustice with you, then approach law/court. You can't act such shamelessly," the home minister said at an event here. When asked about Jain receiving special treatment at Tihar, Shah suggested that it should be posed to the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party to respond whether or not the video was genuine. "If the video is genuine, the accountability lies on them (AAP). They have to respond that to their jailed minister, even .

No role in Satyendar Jain's leaked Tihar videos, documents: ED tells court

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday told a Delhi court that the agency had no role in the leak of purported CCTV footage showing jailed AAP minister Satyendar Jain getting special treatment inside the prison cell. The ED made the submission before Special Judge Vikas Dhull while opposing Jain's plea seeking contempt proceedings against the agency for allegedly leaking the videos to the media. During the hearing, the counsel for Jain submitted before the court that the copy of the ED's reply to the application was already leaked to the media earlier this morning, even before the hearing could take place in the court and its copies could be given to the judge as well as the defence. "Give me a fair trial. Even Ajmal Kasab was given that. I am surely not worse than that. Every minute I am suffering because of their (ED's) actions, the defence counsel told the court. The agency told the court that there was not a single leak from the ED, while it sought adjournment of the matter, ..
