'4G/5G tech stack ready, India to be major telecom tech exporter in 3 yrs'

India has proven its mettle with its indigenous 4G/5G technology stack which is "now ready" and the country is poised to emerge as a major telecom technology exporter to the world in the coming three years, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday. Speaking at the Economic Times Global Business Summit 2023, Vaishnaw, who is also the Minister for Railways, categorically said there is no programme for the privatisation of the national transporter. The 5G services were launched on October 1, 2022, and within a span of 100 days have been rolled out in 200-plus cities. The sheer speed of rollout has been appreciated by industry leaders globally and is being described in many international forums as the "fastest deployment happening anywhere in the world", he said. India's investment in private wireless network is expected to reach nearly USD 250 million by 2027, according to a report by Nokia that also talked of a three-fold jump in mobile data usage in the country over last five years. Nokia's annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report pointed towards a significant acceleration in enterprise investment, and anticipated a major 5G uptake starting second half of 2023. Enterprise spending on private 5G networks will be driven by new use cases in diverse industry verticals, including manufacturing, utilities, transportation and healthcare, among others in India, as per the report. "India's investment in private wireless network is expected to reach around USD 250 million by 2027," the report said. 320 mobile towers found exceeding EMF radiation limits: MoS Telecom

Telecom Department field units have tested as many as 11.6 lakh BTSs across the country for compliance to stipulated EMF radiation norms as on December 2022, of which 320 were found exceeding prescribed limits, Parliament was informed on Friday. As on December 31, 2022, penalties of Rs 13.10 crore have been recovered from defaulting telcom service providers for exceeding the prescribed EMF limits, Minister of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. "As on 31.12.2022, Licensed Service Area (LSA) field units of DoT have tested 11,61,281 number of Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) across the country to check the compliance to prescribed Electromagnetic Field (EMF) radiation norms, out of which a total of 320 BTSs were found exceeding the prescribed EMF limits," Chauhan said. Towns in Odisha to get 5G, 1,814 villages to get 4G by December: official

All urban areas in Odisha will get 5G connectivity by December, while 1,814 villages will get 4G network by that time, an official said on Wednesday. In Odisha, 5G connectivity was launched on January 5 with services in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar through 510 BTSs (base terminal stations), Department of Telecom's deputy director-general BK Nayak said, adding that at present, 13 districts are being served with 5G services by Reliance Jio and nine districts by Airtel. "It is in the rollout phase now to cover all major cities by March 2023, and all cities and towns by December 2023," he said. Total 1,814 villages in the state will be covered by 4G services at an approximate cost of Rs 2,000 crore with a target to complete the project by December, Nayak said. The project is being implemented by BSNL, he said. So far, 42,425 villages have 2G, 3G and 4G services with 25,115 towers. The state has 3.32 crore subscribers, he said. The telecom density in the state was 80 per cent against the .

Reliance Jio tops 4G network speed chart in October, shows Trai data

Telecom major Jio topped the 4G network speed chart in terms of both average download and upload, according to data published by sector regulator Trai. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has dropped BSNL from the 4G speed chart in October as it is yet to roll out 4G services. In October, the telecom major maintained its leadership in download segment by recording an average speed of 20.3 megabits per second (mbps). It was followed by Airtel, which recorded a download speed of 15 mbps and Vodafone Idea (Vi) with 14.5 mbps speed. Jio's 4G upload speed declined marginally to 6.2 mbps in October from 6.4 mbps in September. However, it continued to maintain its lead in the segment. In September, Jio had pipped Vi to top the upload speed segment. Jio pips Vi to top 4G upload speed chart, leads in download speed: Trai

Telecom major Jio topped the 4G network speed chart in terms of average download and upload for the first time in about six years of its commercial operation, according to data published by sector regulator Trai. While Jio's 4G upload speed marginally improved to 6.4 megabit per second, the speed on Vodafone Idea (Vi) network dropped to 5.9 mbps in September from 6.7 mbps in August. Vi was leading the chart for the last several quarters in the uploading speed segment. The average speed is computed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India based on the data it collects across India with the help of its MySpeed application on a real-time basis. Airtel and BSNL networks registered a 3.4 mbps upload speed in September. Jio continued to maintain its leadership in the 4G download chart. In September, the telecom major recorded an average download speed of 19.1 mbps. It was followed by Airtel, which recorded a download speed of 14 mbps, followed by Vi at 12.7 mbps and BSNL at 5 mbps.
