CRISIL studied the performance of 320 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) for 2013-14 (financial year April 1 to March 31) that have created their own brands for their products, whether registered or otherwise. Their performance was analysed for three financial years (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14). The study, which sought to analyse the impact of registering a brand on the growth of the business, revealed that MSMEs with registered brands were at a distinct advantage.MSMEs with registered brands recorded a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24 per cent in average sales along with an operating margin of 11 per cent, whereas MSMEs with unregistered brands recorded a CAGR of 11 per cent and an operating margin of 9 per cent.It was seen that the top five industries more conscious of brand creation are textiles, engineering, electrical, chemicals, and agro-processing. The state-owned National Small Industries Corporation Ltd (NSIC) is in the process of expanding its scheme to train unemployed youth - Rapid Incubation for Entrepreneurship Development - to become entrepreneurs to more states and countries.The model, which the company has used to develop around 300 successful entrepreneurs in Guwahati, has elicited interest from Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) is planning to set up a technology centre near Chennai with an investment of Rs 160-200 crore, which would come as a support to the upcoming aerospace industrial park in the area.The industrial park has so far elicited the interest of around 50 small, medium and large companies to set up their facilities, according to sources."Land has been identified for the technology centre and we are awaiting the state government's approval to start works," said S M Jamkhandi of the MSME Development Institute, under the ministry. The project is part of a World Bank-funded plan to set up technology centres to help small enterprises improve their productivity.The centre will come up near the proposed 250-acre aerospace park in Oragadam, and will be spread over an area of 15-20 acres, with technology-related facilities for aerospace, automotive and electronics sectors. CRISIL studied the performance of 208 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) based in the southern states of India - mainly Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana), and Karnataka - rated during 2013-14 (financial year April 1 to March 31). The study was aimed at understanding the sources of working capital finance for these MSMEs. The study revealed that Tamil Nadu-based MSMEs had better access to short-term funding from financial institutions, as compared to those in the other states.The analysis reveals that funding from bank borrowing for working capital requirements has been higher in the rated MSMEs based in Tamil Nadu at 51 per cent, followed by Karnataka at 44 per cent, and Andhra Pradesh at 35 per cent. Credit from suppliers for these entities was found to be in the range of 22-27 per cent.
