A global tech outage that was related to a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected nearly 8.5 million Microsoft devices, Microsoft said in a blog on Saturday. "We currently estimate that CrowdStrike's update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines," it said in the blog. CrowdStrike has helped develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft's Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix, Microsoft said, adding that the tech giant had worked with both Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform to collaborate on the "most effective approaches."

Jharkhand court convicts 5 Jamtara cyber criminals for money laundering
A special PMLA court in Ranchi on Saturday convicted five Jamtara residents under the anti-money laundering law for running an "organised" cyber crime syndicate, official sources said.
A Netflix series named "Jamtara" that streamed in 2020 is said to have been based on real-life incidents of phishing phone calls and bank accounts scamming launched by some criminals from this district giving it the moniker of 'cyber crime capital' for many years.
Police and other probe agencies later went full steam against these criminals, many of whom were youngsters.
Official sources told PTI those convicted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) include Ganesh Mandal (51), his son Pradeep Kumar Mandal (30), Santosh Mandal (51) and his sons Pintu Mandal (33) and Ankush Kumar Mandal (27).

Embassy in Kuwait condoles demise of Indian family of four in fire accident
The Indian embassy in Kuwait has expressed condolences on the demise of family of four people, who were charred to death in a fire accident in Kuwait.
The Indian family of four, who lost their lives, included two children as well.
"Embassy @indembkwt expresses its deepest condolences on the tragic demise of Mr Mathews Mulackal, his wife and 2 children due to fire in his flat in Abassiya yesterday night," the Indian embassy wrote in a post on X.
It stated that the officials will ensure the early repatriation of the family's mortal remains.
"Embassy is in touch with his family and will ensure early repatriation of mortal remains," the embassy said.

Mild earthquake hits J-K's Kishtwar
A 3.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Saturday, officials said.
According to the National Centre of Seismology (NCS), the tremor was felt at 5.34 pm in the hilly district.
The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers below the surface at latitude 33.29 degrees north and longitude 76.67 degrees east, it said.
A police official said that there was no information about damage from anywhere.

Delhi's maximum temp settles at 37.8 deg C
Delhi on Saturday recorded a maximum temperature of 37.8 degree Celsius, 2.9 notches above season's average, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The city's minimum temperature settled at 27.6 degree Celsius, normal during the season, the weather officials said. The humidity oscillated between 86 per cent and 58 per cent.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) of the national capital was recorded in the "moderate" category with a reading of 106 at 6 pm, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
The weather department has predicted generally cloudy sky with light rain on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 37 and 28 degrees Celsius.

Leaders and workers from opposition INDIA bloc on Saturday staged protest marches across Bihar, citing deteriorating law and order situation.
Leaders from RJD, Congress, CPI-ML (Liberation), CPI(M), CPI, and other opposition parties took part in the protest march from Income Tax Crossing to Dak Bungalow Crossing in Patna chanting anti-government slogans.
Opposition party workers put up posters and banners throughout the state capital, highlighting concerns about the law and order situation and the need to save democracy.
Akhilesh Prasad Singh, president of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC), told reporters, "The Nitish Kumar-led government has failed to address the worsening law and order situation. The state is plagued by daily incidents of murder, rape, kidnapping, extortion, and abduction. Why is Kumar silent on this issue? People of Bihar will not tolerate this and will give a befitting reply to the NDA in the 2025 assembly polls."
Singh added, "Crime rates have surged recently, and the state government seems indifferent to public safety. This issue will be raised in the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly."
