India bag three gold medals in Badminton

It was a day to rejoice for Indian badminton as its ace player PV Sindhu, who had previously won a bronze in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and a silver in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, finally changed the colour of her medal to gold by winning the Women’s Singles final against Canada’s Michelle Li in straight sets.

Happiness was also increased by Lakshya Sen as he won gold in his first ever Commonwealth Games by beating Malaysia’s Tze Yong NG in a three-set thriller. He had lost the first set.

However, it was the gold from the pair of Satwik Siaraj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in the Men’s Doubles category that stole all the limelight as it should have. For the first time ever, India managed to win a men’s Doubles gold in Commonwealth Games’ Badminton event. The dance of Satwik after that was just icing on the cake. They beat the English pair of Sean Vendy and Ben Lane in straight sets as well.

Sharath Kamal becomes most decorated Indian athlete at Birmingham 2022

India’s ace Table Tennis player, Achanta Sharath Kamal, who had already won two gold medals, added another to his tally by winning the Men’s Singles gold medal match against England’s Liam Pitchford. He beat his English opponent 4-1 after losing the first set.

Thanks to the Men’s Singles gold, Kamal, who will also be India’s co-flag bearer alongside Boxer Nikhat Zareen, has now become the most decorated Indian athlete at Birmingham 2022 with three gold and a silver medal in his kitty. Apart from Men’s Singles, he won gold in Mixed Doubles and Men’s Team events while silver in Men’s Doubles.

Sathiyan Ganasekaran, another Men’s Singles player won the bronze medal against another Englishman Paul Drinkhall. He won a seven-set thriller 4-3.

Indian hockey’s wait for Commonwealth gold extended

The Indian men’s hockey team would have to wait at least four more years to add a Commonwealth Gold medal to their cabinet. The wait has been extended after thiey were drubbed 7-0 in a humiliating fashion by six times champion Australia, who won their straight seventh gold in hockey at CWG.

The Indian team looked a pale shadow of its Olympics self as it was not able to create even a single sure shot chance to score. The attack from the team was so bad that in 60 minutes of hockey played, it was not able to create even a single penalty corner.
