G20 presidency opportunity to showcase India's strengths, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a meeting of leaders from different parties on India's presidency of the G-20 and sought their cooperation, saying it is a unique opportunity to showcase the country's strengths to the entire world. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said it was a matter of pride India has got the G-20 presidency and asked Modi to leverage this opportunity for the country's benefit and help deter China from carrying out incursions at the border and correct the trade imbalance with it. Jiang Zemin, the first Chinese President to visit India, passes away

Jiang Zemin, China's first head of state to have visited India in 1996 and heralded a new era of constructive cooperation between the two countries by signing a crucial agreement to reduce the tensions along their disputed border, passed away on Wednesday. Jiang, who was China's president from 1993-2003, died due to leukemia and multiple organ failure in Shanghai at the age of 96, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The announcement of Jiang's death was made by the top organs of the ruling Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) for which he was the leading light for over two decades. Next round of India-UK trade agreement talks in coming months: Com ministry

The next round of talks between India and the UK on a proposed free trade agreement, which aims at boosting trade and investments between the two regions, is proposed to be held in the coming months, the commerce ministry said on Tuesday. India and Britain launched negotiations for the free-trade agreement (FTA) in January with an aim to conclude talks by Diwali (October 24), but the deadline was missed due to political developments in the UK. There are 26 chapters in the agreement, which include goods, services, investments and intellectual property rights. According to sources, the ministry has now fixed an internal deadline to conclude the talks on the trade agreement by March next year. Reduction or elimination of customs duty under the pact would help Indian labour intensive sectors like textiles, leather, and gems and jewellery to boost exports in the UK market.
