The Legislative Council election results are an indication of the people's rebellion and anti-incumbency in Andhra Pradesh, Opposition leader and Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu said on Sunday. Thanking voters for taking the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to victory in three graduates' constituencies polls, the former Chief Minister called it a "people's victory", saying the electorate had reposed complete faith and confidence in the party. Election candidates aligned with the TDP won from Uttarandhra (North Andhra), East Rayalaseema and West Rayalaseema constituencies. Jagan Mohan Reddy always believes in money and muscle power and in indulging in atrocities," TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu said. "He transformed all the elections in these four years only into selections." Prophesying that the ruling YSRCP would vanish into oblivion soon and not return to power, he pointed out that the courts had pulled up the ruling dispensation many times. A bipartisan effort among states to combat voter fraud has found itself in the crosshairs of conspiracy theories fuelled by Donald Trump's false claims about the 2020 presidential election and now faces an uncertain future. One state has dropped out, a second is in the process of doing so and a handful of other Republican-led states are deciding whether to stay. The aim of the Electronic Registration Information Centre, a voluntary system known as ERIC, has been to help member states maintain accurate lists of registered voters by sharing data that allows officials to identify and remove people who have died or moved to other states. Reports also help states identify and ultimately prosecute people who vote in multiple states. In Maryland, state election officials have received reports through the system identifying some 66,000 potentially deceased voters and 778,000 people who may have moved out of state since 2013. In Georgia, the system is credited with providing data to remove

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday asserted that an individual candidate was more important than a party in the hill state. The NPP leader, who won from Pynursla constituency, said the party hoped to get an absolute majority, but a different mandate was given by the people. "In Meghalaya's politics, individual candidates matter more than the party. It is the nominees who win the elections, not the party," Tynsong told PTI after his victory was announced. "We expected to cross the magic number on our own. We did not expect such a divided mandate," he added. Though the NPP had run the outgoing government in alliance with five other parties, it fought the 2023 assembly polls alone. Asked about the next course of action, the deputy chief minister said, "We had hoped for forming the government alone, but the electorate has given a different mandate. We don't have any option but to go for a coalition government." He, however, declined to comment anything on wh

A largely peaceful voting in the assembly polls with a turnout of over 73.65 per cent was reported from Nagaland, which was earlier a hotbed for militants, till 3 pm on Monday, an official said. However, stone pelting and blank firing caused tension in the Bhandari assembly constituency in Wokha district. A tenuous ceasefire prevails in the state for more than a decade now as peace talks are continuing with NSCN (IM) and other groups and the central government. Voting began at 7 am with over 13 lakh electors set to decide the electoral fate of 183 candidates. Long queues were seen in front of polling stations since 7 am when voting began.
